Let's have an expy thread. Who are your favorite expies of famous characters and what specifically do you like about them compared to or in contrast to what they're a reference to.

Since Hyperion was already posted I'll mention another favorite.

Red Lion

African President/Dictator who frequently hires Deathstroke. Trapped in a civil war with tribes who oppose him, he does whatever he can to maintain control of his country.

He was created by Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan. He is a pastiche of the Marvel superhero Black Panther on whom Priest had previously worked on and is closely attached

The Charlton characters were likely not super famous at the time, but they are known now.
Design and character wise, I prefer the Watchmen characters. I like The Question the most from the Charlton bunch, but I like Rorschach even more. I really like his tragic arc.

They got some development pre Flashpoint. After Flashpoint you got two versions of them: eath 7 and earth 8, earths that were heavily based on main Marvel and Ultimate Marvel, although writers tend to focus more on the villains than the heroes.

I don't know , I don't think I ever laughed so hard as when reading Ethan try to deny he was Moral Man. Like this 7 ft dude couldn't fit his shoulders through the door trying to pretend he's a mild mannered reporter. No offense to your personal tastes but so many edgy serious takes on Superman. This was the first I think I saw go in the opposite direction and I just giggled every time he shows up. Even his "edgy" version put a smile on my face.

It's a great game, just a top to bottom ode to Kirby. There was a comic adaptation from Image that had Tom Scioli doing the art, worth checking out.
It also had a pretty strong mod scene at the time for skins and stuff, that's how I found out about a bunch of comics. Really fond memories of it.

Atoman/Superman = Captain Atom = Dr Manhattan
Phantom Lady/Black Canary = Nightshade = Silk Spectre
The Shield = Peacekeeper = Comedian
Daredevil = Johnny Thunder = Ozymandias
Spirit/Spider-Man = Blue Beetle 1/Bluebeetle 2 = Niteowl 1/Niteowl 2

Black Jack (man with gun and Tricolor (woman with sword) from the sequel are pretty lame but at least we got Sky King

He's kinda correct about the Daredevil part, Pete Morisi originally wanted to do a comic about the Golden Age Daredevil but couldn't get the rights, so he came up with Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt. He deliberately gave Peter Cannon the costume he did because he was basing it on the Golden Age Daredevil's costume

His origin is based on Centaur Comics' Amazing-Man, though

He didnโ€™t kill them, they were his friends he lost. Just lie how Hickmanโ€™s Secret Wars (which was going on at the time) had Hyperion (Marvel Superman), Morrisonโ€™s Multiversity was more or less his own not very subtle piss take on Secret Wars.

Thunderer was menat to be Ultimate Thor as at the time, the Incursions killed off the Ultimate Universe. So Thunderer was supposed to be the last of his universe too. The whole point of Multiversity was cricizing Marvel and other companies in general raising the stakes so high that fans would inevitably lose interest with constant โ€œhard choicesโ€ and universes not telling any stories except being used as fodder for how big the threat is

Should add that they weren't created in the same way the Mephisto dupes were - the Grandmaster gave powers to a bunch of normal guys in 616. Only exception is Hyperion, who he actively created. Doctor Spectrum eventually died during a fight with Black Panther, Hyperion bought it fighting his Earth-712 counterpart in Gruenwald's Squadron, Nighthawk became a hero and has, as far as I know, been AWOL for over a decade at this point and the Whizzer became Speed Demon.

Multiversity was a project that Morrison was working way before it Hickman's Avengers run. Also Multiversity was published between 2014 and 2015 while Hickman's Secret Wars was announced the same year it was published.

Secret Wars hadn't happened when Multiversity came out but Hickman already had the Illumaniti dissolve into childish infighting and pity parties after they killed the Great Society and their world.

The theme of "Time runs out" was already well established.

You can even see a riff on the "All hope lies in Doom" where Lord Havoc fucks with the cosmic rubix cube and summons Evil Nix. He has to be mercy killed by Hawkeye because he can't take the cosmic truth. Rather than Hickman's god-king who saves portions of reality (by destroying the rest? I think?) Morrison depicts him as a chump that gets in over his head and pays for it.

Silver Agent's a real good Captain America expy I think. His origin is simmilar in that he starts out as a weaker than average guy much like Steve but I guess it's a bigger personal problem for him because every other dude in his family found their way into law, as officers, lawyers or in the millitary iirc. Even though he's got his condition (cerebral palsy?) he still finds a way to be of service to his country as a postman, and eventually winds up with his super soldier body trying to escape from some mob goons. But it's the way he talks/is written that sells him as a Captain America. He's always got a plan, is always concerned about others, always gives people strength just by being there. His overarching story though Astro City is a great sacrifice I could see Cap making, fighting on for his country/the world even knowing that an unfair death awaits him at the end of it all. He chose to do it too, he could've just stayed in the future but he's always gotta do the right think like Cap would even when it goes against the government. Sure he's not the most powerful hero around but he's still one of the best of them, past present and future

An adult alien who crashlands in the American South in the 1800s and transforms into a black baby as he's being found by a slave woman. He grows up as a slave, fights in the Civil War, and then lives up to the present by faking his death and taking the identity of his own son after x number of years. In the present, he lives as a highly successful and socially conservative lawyer, who believes that African-Americans have a self-defeating mentality and could raise themselves up if they only worked hard for it. Raquel Ervin aka Rocket discovers his powers and convinces him that he can be a shining example of black excellence by using his powers for good, thus, Icon.

That's the Milestone story anyway, I haven't read anything of them since they got folded into mainline DC.

The Shi'ar Imperial Guard is a riff on the Legion of Super-Heroes. Gladiator is Superboy, Smasher is Ultra Boy, Fang is Timber Wolf, etc. They were created by Claremont and Cockrum - Cockrum had been the artist for Superboy and the Legion only a few years prior.
Fang in particular is a funny one - Cockrum takes over art on Superboy, redesigns Timber Wolf and gives him the pointy haircut, then he goes over to Marvel and redesigns Wolverine and gives him the same hair. Then he designs Fang, then eventually has Wolverine wearing Fang's outfit. This dude *really* likes Timber Wolf.

Claremont and Cockrum's X-Men borrrowed a lot from Cockrum's time on the Legion in general - to the point that Nightcrawler was an idea Cockrum had proposed for the Legion and DC had rejected.

Moore's intent for Tom Strong was what would happen if the pulp genre became dominant instead of the superhero genre and how would one modernize it
Tom Strong's origin is a cross between Doc Savage (being raised to be a the perfect human) and Tarzan's (parents crashing on the island) and the inventor aspect likely comes from Tom Swift (the name, probably partially as well). And like >>149039224 said there's also a bit of Hugo Danner in him and there's Superman traits.

There's also some carryover from what Moore was doing on Supreme (Tom Strong's enemy Saveen ages and dies, Tom's prior love Greta Gabriel is out of the picture, Tom's outfit is red and white). But there's also other superhero homages in Tom Strong. The Terra Obscura story was Moore repurposing Nedor's Doc Strange as Tom Strong's counterpart and the Nedor heroes being the Earth-Two equivalent, only their Earth is located in the same universe (which is sort-of the idea with Marvel's Counter-Earth). Warren Strong is a rabbit version of Tom Strong kind of like how Hoppy the Marvel Bunny is the Captain Marvel bunny equivalent, and there's a story that's done in the style of the old Fawcett Captain Marvel comics, I forget the issue at the moment but it's the one where Tom teams up with his younger self and Warren. The one with the Salamander guy is kind of pulp lost civilization but also Namor and Atlantis (and he even hinted at this in Top 10 with the dialogue from that bickering couple)

He's kind of also Captain America in a way but I can't remember what else Liefeld was riffing on. I think some people have said Terminator as well.

I know that years later when Moore was revamping Liefeld's characters, Moore was intending on revamping Prophet by showing in Prophet's past he was a Doc Savage stand-in. There's the possibility that some ideas from this also got carried over to when Moore went to work on Tom Strong instead.

I think Marvel has done a better job with the DC expies than DC with the Marvel expies.

This. DC always come as petty when it comes to these kind of things, as Marvel expies always come as weak, dumb or just plain evil.

I wish they would use some of the other guys more often
It's always the main five whenever the Squadron shows up

At least promote Skrullian Skymaster and Amphibian to full time members
Hell I'll even take Jovian and the Norn >>149010890

Scrawny guy gets changed by satellite operation instead of super serum. If he done this at Marvel as he originally planned it was going to be a Captain America of the Future thing. I think Mark Evanier said this in the intro he wrote for the OMAC Archive

This issue had some nods to Fawcett Captain Marvel, like the first page layout is similar to the first pages of a lot of Fawcett Captain Marvel stories and Pete Poplaski did a pretty decent C.C. Beck imitation for the final chapter of the story

The old man is also kind of loosely based on Shazam (the wizard) but is actually an older Tom Strong. This made me wonder if this was in reference to C.C. Beck saying in an interview he deliberately drew the wizard Shazam to look like what he believed an older Captain Marvel would look like

What expy was he? I thought he was the Atom?

>>149052015
The project behind it was more thought out. I mean the Marvel expies didnt got a miniseries, so it might just never got beyond npc levels.

If you decide to read more anyway, keep to the minis 2005 and 2018, seriously.
