In the pre-recession world when people had money to spend to you could make a little comic book and actually see it make a splash in a popular culture that hadn’t yet been atomized to the four winds. Scott Pilgrim was the last hurrah of that era.

Scott Pilgrim came out at the right place, right time. The anime only did as well as it did because of nostalgia and U.S. audiences being starved for "young adult animation," which was popular at the turn of the century... when the OG graphic novel series first released.
