The problem is that while the show goes out of its way to show that Rick as a nihilist is in a miserable state, it doesn't show an alternative to what it criticizes. It's the same way that a show will talk about how a trope is dumb and cliche while using said trope. Being self aware doesn't mean anything if you're not using that awareness to improve the media.

Well Smiling Friends is a newer show for one, but the main problem with Rick and Morty is that its production very quickly grew more corporate once all its original writers left and needed replacing. Dan Harmon is notoriously egotistical and pretentious, so you can imagine the new people he hires and mentors wouldn't be able to replicate what made his and Roiland's show become popular initially.

So while it seems SF will stay written by just Zach Hadel & Michael Cusack, RaM has a revolving door of new writers desperately trying and failing to keep fans engaged with ambitious new ideas while also keeping Harmon appeased with his "show that will never end." It's a tough balancing act when fans are expecting payoff to various plot threads but your boss just wants you to pump out infinite ideas with no ending in sight.

I feel like adult cartoons are defined by their worst and best episodes in a season.

The best smiling friends episodes are amazing and the worst are okay, whereas the best r&m episodes were a long time ago and the worst are literally unwatchable.

Going from that's amorte which I actually liked to rise of the numericons was a fucking punch in the gut reminding of why rick and morty just fucking sucks for the most part, while going from gwimbly to mr president was like 'eh, I'll keep watching but I hope there aren't more episodes like that'.

Family Guy and the Simpsons get a bad rap now because their best eps are so far behind them that you're just going to be looking for the worst episode in a season and compare them to other worse episodes in other seasons, there's really no point in watching because it's so episodic, everything is staying where it is, none of the drama matters, the jokes hit or miss and it ends. Boring.

The trial revealed he was also kind of a weird sex pest. Had he not been caught up in a legal battle and this stuff discovered he'd probably just have a "I'm sorry this isn't me" and they move on but he got fired under the assumption of a serious crime then found out about everything else so they didn't want him back.
