This mindbroke Matt and Trey into hating the earlier episodes. They may hate Family Guy but they LOVE The Simpsons.

It was on its way. South Park started in the summer between The Simpsonsโ€™ 8th and 9th seasons. Sort of seems like as South Park went up, The Simpsons went down.

They hate the seasons without Butters. The episode that inspired this parody was a post-Butters episode. "Simpsons Did It."

Neither of them were particularly vicious or anything. It came off good natured and fun.

i swear zoomers, well late millennials too, are so fucking stupid. your dumbass parents let you watch these kind of cartoons instead of shit like gargoyles or batman, so you think these are "story based" shows , they're not, they don't have lore, there is no character arcs, everything is a gag.....it only exists to be a vehicle for gags, you can think it's not funny, but stop thinking it's something it's not

Itโ€™s always the same sounding people
The guy doing the narrator is the guy who voices skinner and kent brockman
the woman doing Stan and Kyleโ€™s voices is the one who does jimbo
The robot? The guy who voices Homer, the grandpa and Willie
And OJ, the guy who voices otto
the only voice i ever found funny in the first place was chief wiggum everyone else including Marge never sound appealing to me not even some of the celebrity guest voices

Yeah, the only real jab at them in the Simpsons Did It episode was when Butters comes up with that machine that replaces cherries in chocolate covered cherries with mayonnaise. He confirms with Dougie that it's never been done on the Simpsons and Dougie responds that it hasn't since The Simpsons would be more clever than that.
Immediately afterwards, a preview for a new Simpsons episode comes on TV where the plot involves Bart creating the machine Butters had just created.

In truth most of the early breakout work an artist does is either something they didn't put as much thought into or didn't have the skill to fully express.
However that work how it was is what attracts an audience and so when the creative refines their skill or their tastes change they can feel trapped and grow resentful of their earlier work constraining them and making them fell like their new work doesn't get a fair shake on account of the audience coming from their earlier work.

However in the case of South park its very much that Matt and Trey were fucking around with the early seasons in a way they grew out of, however since South park is a big cash cow flagship which serves as a vessel for the content they want to do these days.
