The real tests for SB will be if it can outlive its original voice actor (be it death or retirement) and after that, if it can get other successful iterations

Currently? Yes. SpongeBob is still the standard for success other Nickelodeon shows must reach. Too many shows have been cancelled for not achieving the same ratings. I remember the hate art people working at Nick made of SpongeBob. Furthermore, his show is engrained in a lot of memes and he is still on the air. Mickey Mouse is the face of a massive corporation. Bugs Bunny is in the same boat with Warner. Both of them had to share the spotlight in Who Framed Roger Rabbit because their corporations demanded it.

I am a fan of Popeye but he is not like SpongeBob. He lacks new cartoons for kids to know him from. We almost had it with Genndy Tartakovsky but it got canned. Popeye entering public domain only gave us the movie Popeye the Slayer Man, a generic slasher movie.

Tom&Jerry and Scooby-Doo deserve to be grouper with Mickey and Bugs more than SpongeBob. They're icons that last generations with different interations. There's only ever been the one SpongeBob voiced by Tom Kenny made by Nickelodeon.

Mickey is currently in Mickey Mouse Funhouse, a toddler show, and they were still making Wonderful World of Mikcey Cartoons up to 2023.

Bugs Bunny currently appears in Bugs Bunny Builders, and was in the Looney Tunes Cartoons on Max as recently as 2023.

Both Mickey and Bugs are currently in preschool cartoons, and regularly appear in mainstream cartoons every couple of years.

The last time Betty Boop appeared in major media was in 1988 in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Her last cartoon was way back in 1939.

Spongebob has consistently been shown to be only a few inches high compared to humans within the actual series versus how all Nick crossovers make him closer in size to the other Nicktoons. Mickey and Bugs are closer to human scale then their animal counterparts.

I would tend to agree that both of those are more worthy.
I’m not going to argue Spongbob hasn’t been massive, but there hasn’t been the same enduring legacy and influence.

Spongebob I would place with something like [the show with the diminutive ungulates] in a lower tier.

The Simpsons is (was) a fantastic show, but it’s so rooted in the 80s-90s American TV that it doesn’t have the same timeless quality as a cartoon animal. SpongeBob also has 90s cultural imprints, and Mickey and Bugs are way older, but these 3 can all still be put in any situation and fit, unlike Homer where outside of Treehouse of Horror, the less sitcomy his setting, the more out of place he is.
