It's always about what it would be most beneficial for the winners in the moment. The result of the war did not bring about the end of slavery, only reform to the system, while it did settle the Nullification and Secession questions for good, which should make it apparent the war was about settling those questions. The war was not the first time those questions had come up, the most relevant being the 1830s Nullification crisis which was over tariffs. There was also the Whisky rebellion Don't act like the North would have let the South go if they tried to leave over tariffs, or taxes, or Texas, or anything else. Also, what the other guy said.
