I can't fathom an Alf comic being successful enough to last 48 issues. That's four straight years of it.

I can. This series was published in late 80s/early 90s when people were still buying comics off grocery stores and comic shops. The Alf show was popular enough to get a cartoon spin-off that lasted from 1987-1989 so the sales on the book were probably high (for a licensed book) and made paying the license easier.

They did know they were getting canceled in the final four issues so they reference the cancellation in three covers of those. The fourth was OP's cover.

The Alf comic should have been about his life on Melmac like the cartoon series instead of hanging out with the lame human family

The comic is mostly him and the family but they have back-up comics of him recounting his days on Melmac which were flashbacks of the cartoon cast

I miss comics being on news stands, convenience stores, and pharmacies on the magazine rack. also, affordable prices for them to entice you to try new stuff

Alf had two (!) fucking cartoons, a TV movie and a shitton of merchandise (t-shirts, toys, fucking trading cards).
The demand was there.

Alf the tv show ended in spring 1990.
I had no idea the comic lasted way longer than the show going into 1991.

Hell Anon, Heathcliff had a comic for Marvel's kid friendly Star comics that completely outlasted the line, running through 1991
