The movies were better for both characters and worldbuilding. The main show felt less than the sum of its parts

It was very episode dependent. It was never a show I was particularly excited to see on the schedule; it was always a wait and see scenerio for which episodes would air. Most of the episodes are pretty boring, and the worst ones are just frustrating to sit through.

Is it just me or did they make certain characters dicks in certain episodes just for the plot to work? Even Wilt came off as an asshole in some episodes like the one with the big monster that targeted Bloo

It was good. STRONG emphasis on "good". It was far from great but it was above average. Like the definition of a 7/10. The fact that it got so huge was mostly a product of it appealing to the 2000s TV zeitgeist. Also episode quality varies really fucking hard, some feel like classics comparable with the best episodes of shows like Courage or EEnE while others feel like dogshit, and there's everything in-between along the way. Most episodes are still at least good though so overall I think it weighs out to being a good show, it just needed more writing room quality control.
Excellent character designs though, I think that's the show's actual strong point. Literally every character looks unique, their design displays something about their personality, and they're all immediately recognizable and memorable.

On a recent watch i can safely say that some episodes are great but other ones bored me out of my mind, the whole house full of imaginary friends of all kinds lost its novelty when most episodes were focused on Mac n Bloo or the main gang.

It was... mid.
Some specific episodes are fine but the movies/specials are great.
But a lot of the episodes felt like were designed to make me feel mad towards the show.
Episodes like the Bendy one or the one where Frankie takes care of a teenager (not really).
Specially after Bloo and Mac become more cynical as the season progresses.
