>Souls are made and developed before you are even born
Doesn't this have... unfortunate implications?

If you mean towards pro-life/choice arguments. Not really. They didn't show when the soul enters the body.
Soul was a nice movie, imagine if it looked good.

Given that time does not exist in eternity, your soul before birth coexists with your soul after death.

I imagine that makes for some really interesting conversations.

I mean more that the whole argument of "does your environment shape you?" goes out the window and people like Ted Bundy are just destined to be evil instead of evil because of their upbringing.

Though, the idea that a fetus doesn't have a soul is also kind of fucked up, I expect that idea from artists in California so it doesn't phase me as much as, "Oh yeah, there's no helping this person, they're doomed from birth".

No?
I mean, Mormonism believes God is an alien from the planet Kolob and he has an infinite number of sex slavesโ€“i mean sPiRiT WiVeSโ€“ that he puts his alien God dick into and jizzes his alien God cum up inside of and they get pregnant and give birth to souls which are then incarnated on earth as human foetuses. They call it "the preexistence."
This is a similar idea, albeit with a lot less alien God fucking.
>yes, they really believe this

But in the context of the movie, we see their interests and personalities develop beforehand-- often at random. So it means that no matter how you try to raise your kid, they are destined to have a specific personality beforehand. That means something like Joe's interest in music was not developed on Earth, it was merely a switch being activated and he was always destined to love music. But that's also true for horrible traits such as being a warmonger or a serial killer. They even make a joke in the Great Before where a soul has a really intense, competitive personality and a Jerry says, "That's Earth's problem".

Well, if it's of any comfort, they imply that Jesus's resurrection was real since one of the Jerry's says, "The count hasn't been off in centuries". So I guess they're playing both hands.

>>149089960
But not everyone is inspired enough to become a musician, which is what the implication is for Joe.

>Wasting his life
What? It's still something he loves to do. That doesn't go away, it's just implied he lives life for passion instead of career or fame now. And that doesn't negate the whole idea that your interests and personality are developed before you even get to Earth. We see the souls being sent to personality pavilions to become things like insecure or excitable before they're born.

But I'm not talking the movie's inspiration, I'm talking about the worldbuilding inside the movie itself, which doesn't feature reincarnation because we see old souls getting zapped like bugs. No where does it imply souls are being recycled within the world of this movie.

Yes, because he feels that his talent has no meaning unless he gets rewarded for it (Applause, audience, fame, a legacy, etc). It's explicitly spelled out that life isn't about having a cosmic meaning, it's about the joy of experiencing life. And still none of that negates the idea that horrible people are just born horrible, not made horrible though bad experiences. Did YOU watch the movie?

I've heard some stupid hippies say that souls are created or reincarnate into whatever body they pick, like the soul decides it likes the parents and chooses to incarnate based on that.

The entire notion of souls don't make any sense if you think about it at all.

I don't want to derail the thread but you're approaching it from a mortal perspective. From a quantum probability perspective your "soul" is like a billion digit password that occasionally shows up in the random number generator we call a universe. You're always still you when you reincarnate even if the other numbers around you are different. It's not like a rigid structured password either we are shaped by the worlds we go through and change along the way. Even your genetic codes can shift according to diet and exercise. So in the conventional sense a soul popping out of your body at death is less accurate depiction than a fractal like formation slowly fading out of existence but fundamentally still existing should that fractal pattern reappear at any point. I wouldn't listen to hippies about the soul most of that feel good shit is just outright wrong and poorly constructed optimism.

So in other words, a soul is a completely original concept completely unrelated to any use of the word "soul" for the past several thousand years. Got it.

I can buy the whole idea of our souls choosing the type of life we want to live for certain experiences.
What I don't understand, is if that kind of stuff exists, why is the world like the way it is now, where it seems like soul growth and experiences are slowing down by a lot.
Mainly due to the increasing lack of freedom and pressures put on everyone by an evil small percentage of Earth's population along with the technological advancements and distractions.

If I was a soul, I just wouldn't see any benefit of being born on Earth right now.

Souls are willingly born into lives full of suffering and struggle... because of a desire for personal growth or some idiotic shit like that.

that's a single (1) perspective to get you actually thinking about the concept of a soul in greater depth. In fact my beliefs are based on the Atman from Hinduism, just using quantum mechanics to tie things to a more scientific understanding. That's why I said it's LIKE a billion digit password. You're allowed to come to your own conclusions about what vague concepts like souls are, considering how many different interpretations of the concept exist throughout history

Cause creating a bad person is not a mathematical guarantee. We can usually point to something physical as an explanation for how someone got to that point. Many killers had terrible childhoods and the rest tend to have something physically wrong with their brain. Sometimes, it's an unfortunate combination of both. I can't think of extreme outliers where someone is born with a great life, loving parents, no mental issues, and becomes a serial killer.

In the world of Pixar, though, David Parker Ray was always going to be a vicious psychopath even if Mary and Joseph were his parents.
