Even ignoring the troubled production history and Katzenberg losing his shit and trying to make unauthorized cuts in the 11th hour - it's just not a very good movie overall.

It happens sometimes, it came out and flopped when Disney was desperate for a win, so most anyone knows about the movie is that it flopped
its like ET on Atari, it was bad, but nowhere near "worst game ever" it was just the straw that broke the camels back and was the last major release before the video game crash, so its mainly remembered for causing it

Do you think anybody's ever going to take another crack at the Chronicles of Prydain?

In theory it would be great fodder for animated content. I suppose it would have to be a movie series, one movie for each of the five books. Or perhaps an animated show, with five seasons, one season for each book.

Yeah, once you actually just sit down and watch it from start to finish...The Black Cauldron really deserves the shit it gets. There is very very little right with it.

Gurgi being somewhat irritating is honestly small potatoes compared to just how borked the overall pacing and tone the movie has. Gurgi is incredibly easy to point at but honestly every character just flat out sucks in their own way.

this is kinda my cop out answer but you have to give it to someone other than Disney of that era. they were never going to do the whole "80s dark fantasy / whimsy" thing right.

You want a good Black Cauldron in the mid 80s? You give it Bluth, Rankin Bass or Jim Henson. ...maybe even rené laloux or TMS.
HELL you could have given it to George Lucas and he could have used his connections to produce a Willow-like adventure film full of 80s era ILM effects that probably would have been awesome.

Why does every American think every state, dimension, every time space, every other country on earth, even the fantasies inside your head, must follow American federal age of consent law? That's not even a universally valued and applied thing in the US right now. It's just so bizarre to me that someone would even submit to authority in their mind. This is all fantasy. You can become a murderhobo and kill the whole Black Cauldron cast, or just that annoying sidekick. You can have a whole history with the princess, bedding her at a young age out in the forest, keeping the sword and letting that little dog creature die, then becoming Elden Lord. Fucking normies man, the invisible courtroom in your head isn't going to hold you in high esteem because you insist on mentioning to everyone online that you are absolutely not okay with fucking imaginary minors.

Arawn Death Lord. The movie's prologue loosely alludes to him by making him the evil king that was thrown into the Cauldron and the face on its side. There's also a lich side villain in the book Taran Wanderer that probably resulted in Disney's Horned King being a lich rather then a guy in a mask.
