THOSE DECADES OF BULLYING DISNEY INTO RETURNING TO FORM WORKED!
Uh oh that means all the lazy artists will actually have to learn how to use pencils and pens and do actual labor.
I hope they bring back cels as well.

He says this like there isn't a glut of people begging to work in 2D.
The big reason why 2D indie animation has been taking off is that there's literally thousands of these fuckers looking for work.

And it's based, maybe they should bring back cels too, some of the millennial women who ruined the industry can be demoted to paint mixers and colorists like their ancestors before.

It'll be years before they can rebuild the pipeline. The two 2D movies we got early in Bob Iger's tenure were largely made by whatever veteran animators they could get back and Mary Poppins Returns and the Enchanted movies were all outsourced.

Nah. Disney's quality actually IMPROVED a lot when they finally switched to digital. Just compare any Renaissance film to any Xerox-era film, and you can see how big the difference is. And I'm saying this as someone who doesn't really care for the content of the Renaissance very much. But honestly, this statement I'm making is a neutral observation, and really just shows that Disney stopped caring, more than anything else. The best cel animation that Disney did was in the 1930's and 40's, and then it became a grossly neglected art in their own material. But still, cels were never what made animation great. In a vacuum, they're just pieces of plastic, and the artist is the real spark.

The article seems to suggest without actually saying that this was why they brought Ron Clements back to the studio, but we’ll see.

The Pixar originals implosion makes it slightly more likely, but 2D animation is a bit like sitcoms with studio audiences, studio executives are so biased toward modern cutting-edge technology that they don’t want to believe old-school formats are still popular even when they are.

Yeah but does anyone even care about the digitized era of Disney 2D?
I mean for TV yeah the digital era was fantastic for them, they knew how to implement it for TVs.
Like for their films the magic was there in the digitized ones but they were missing that umph, that missing feeling that cel gives you.
Princess and the Frog was fantastic, but it would've been a masterpiece if it was done on cel.

Maybe, but at some point a technology becomes impossible to use. I’m told that the old-school film nitrate stock makes old movies look way better than the less flammable film they switched to in the 1950s but you can’t actually ask people to make new movies on a type of film that constantly catches fire.

It’s a daunting enough task just re-training people in 2D techniques, we’ll never be able to train enough people to use cels as well as when that was the only way to create an animated film.

It could work if Disney made their own like >>149119149 said, all they would have to do is get some artists to feed it animation and art and just have it do in between animation.
Honestly sounds like something they'd try.

We shall see in the future.
I'm not hopeful, but it'll be interesting.

They’re going to do 1 of 2 things
>make the first attempt a DEI type movie
Or
>use AI interpolation to do everything but key frames

If not both, either of which will guarantee failure and they’ll never do another 2D again

I'm thinking if they do this they have to start off with a sequel, they get one chance to make this work if they are going to keep 2d around and I don't think they can risk the initial picture on an original. It needs to be a Lion King 2 or Lilo 2 or Aladdin sequel or something of that realm
At the same time it is somewhat feasible because critical praise and Oscars and so on are falling out of their grasp entirely and if they want to be that studio they have to return artistic qualities to their film. Plus the Grubhub style of things like Elio and Wish is part of why their recent films are bombing

They’re absolutely going to come up with some kind of cutting-edge new AI or other technology to replace in-betweening.

If nothing else, the only way to convince studios to bankroll something old and uncool is to tell them you’ve found a new and cool and cheaper way of doing it.
