Marvel canceling books like mad
Marvel canceling books like mad

Have you noticed Marvel cancels most books in a year or less now?

Why doesn't Marvel just number every comic as #1, that way every comic will have the #1 boost? This seems to be the route they want to head down.

my pitch is for a Deadpool event where every issue is a #1, i.e. Deadpool's Secret War Invasions Alpha #1, Deadpool's Secret War Invasions Part One #1, Deadpool's Secret War Invasions Part Two #1, etc. and the tie-ins follow the same format

Marvel seems to have a shotgun marketing strategy where they’re staying afloat just by the sheer volume of shit they’re putting out. All they have to worry about is selling it to the comic store, once the comic store has it it’s their problem that it’s just gonna rot on the shelf or a quarter bin, it’s still a sale for Marvel

How long can they sustain such a model once comic shops realize what is going on?

They know what’s going on and to answer your first question there’s a reason most comic shops have pivoted more towards other nerd hobbies like Magic or Funko pops

Alternate covers anymore are insane. When I was a kid an alternate cover had some kind of gimmick like foil or glow in the dark but now they’re literally just like five random art pieces that Marvel had like sitting in a drawer or something

Why don't they stop buying any of books that don't sell or only buy preorders people specifically make?

Marvel likes to do this thing where they tell the comic shop “order x amount of copies of Riri and Miles Tell You Why You Shouldn’t Like Peter Parker or Tony Stark we’ll send you a copy of this highly sought after collectible alternate cover you can sell for twice what you’re paying for those comics” and since the focus has shifted from a storytelling medium to a collectible medium it works.

Because it can only be #1 for that year.
For example Ghost Rider #1 2024.

Now you can’t make another Ghost Rider #1 for 2024, but you can make a Ghost Rider #1 2025.

I believe there were multiple Ant Man #1s and Spider-Gwen #1s in 2015. I think they did like Spider-Gwen #1 2015a and Spider-Gwen #1 2015b or something

That's the usual move, preoder for the pull list + a certain number based on the comic. Something like Batman, Spidey, Wolverine, order like 15-20 because people might just pick that up, something more on the indy side or a D-lister gets maybe 3 extra if they're lucky. Maybe a few more if the artist or a variant looks good. But it's working for Marvel, in May of the top 50 books, 32 were Marvel, and 15 were DC, 2 Image, and one was Keenspot.

And I think that's really the play, they're launching stuff to see what sticks, since Disney can bankroll losses, which are relatively small compared to other industries, and hoping for a new big hit like Ms. Marvel or Miles, while Warner is not in the same boat with DC and needs to be much more cautious.

Arguably they are. If you believe that Thinking Critical guy, ASM's orders were around 48,000 an issue last month. Usually ASM orders get more than 50,000 an issue, even during the BND era. 48,000 is like, late end of the Byrne era, right before JMS came on board

Marvel gives any potential ongoing a minimum of 10 issues to gauge potential. If they do poorly, they are cancelled. Simple as that
