H-B cartoons were low effort as fuck. Like 99% of them were just parodying some Hollywood actor or a live action TV show that was out at the time.

As a kid who watched HB cartoons, i want to say that the designs played a big role for me. They are just nice to look at imho

You're forgetting the fact that whenever they made a successful property they copy and pasted the formula at least 10 times.

I kinda understand why their cartoons looked so cheap early on but why the fuck did they keep the same quality after making billions?

I could excuse the cheapness of HB cartoons if the writing was good.
Rocky and Bullwinkle is the far superior approach. It looked cheap and barely moved but it was actually funny. Never laughed at a single Yogi Bear episode.

It depends on the design. The characters in OPs pic are sort of grating IMO. Scooby Doo, the Flintstones, those are good designs.

H-B was focused on selling product, not creating art. They produced what the networks or the TV syndicates would buy. Sometimes the initial idea would come from the network.

joe barbera famously was baffled by how networks kept ordering more scooby-doo episodes and clones

I think a lot credit goes to Iwao Takamoto. He worked at Disney as an inbetweener with the lead animator for Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty.

He was the main character designer for a lot HB animation.

HB cartoons were certainly better animated than Jay Ward stuff.

John K. does appreciate a lot of Hanna-Barbera though. Of course he'd agree with OP about a lot of it being low effort, but he praises HB stuff and is a huge Flintstones fan. He even worked on the 80s Jetsons revival. Not to mention Boo Boo Runs Wild and shorts like that.

This blogpost gives you an idea:

>I think if you don't have a lot of money to make your cartoons with, the least you can do is use pleasing design and great voices. Neither of those things cost a lot of money, and together they make instant living characters. Of course, whoever's in charge has to have enough aesthetic sensory equipment to be able to tell a good designer and voice from mundane ones. We know that's not usually the case.

>There is a common belief in animation circles that "It all begins with a good story" and I'd like to challenge that. I personally believe it all starts with a good character. When you have good looking specific characters and dynamite voices, the stories write themselves - well that is, if you take advantage of them, which Hanna Barbera didn't always do. Not when they had to churn out so much product every week.
