For adults, the kids that grew up watching Avatar and loved it a lot are now in their 20s, with the upper end even hitting 30 nowadays. Ironically, it also helps that there's been a LOT of misfires when it came to trying to continue the franchise, so something that solely focuses on the original series has a bit more favor towards it.
For kids, pop culture has been cannibalizing itself for a while now. Even back in the day, kids were being influenced by adults saying that "so and so when *I* grew up is THE best thing ever" with complete and total certainty and aggression online, garnering a lot of interest and respect in kids for things they've never even interacted with. This has only gotten more prevalent as more and more people make spouting their butt-ass opinions in a faux-sophic manner their entire career. Not to mention, a lot of kids' entertainment is solely Youtube and commercial streaming services, where Avatar is one of the few good things on some services like Netflix, so for some, they get the commentary, for others, they've actually had a good chance of having actually watched it.
