Why hasn't there been any proper western fantasy cartoon recently? Like the concept feels really underrepresented all things considered.

Too many incredibly shit attempts at making a movie in the genre in the 80s soured the whole concept to studio executives. They also tried a few animated ones that still never did well. Black Cauldron, Last Unicorn, Hobbit, and Fire & Ice were failures. Also until very recently fantasy was fully synonymous with Nerd shit, so again executives were not that into it.

They only ever allow some to get through if there is some kind of gimmick that makes it stand apart from typical fantasy. Things like Disenchanted, Magiswords, Adventure Time, Barbarian and the Troll were wacky takes on it that mostly made fun of the genre.
