Its been years since I read it, but I remember in one of the issues set during the first days of the outbreak, we had a "patient zero" type who knew stuff he couldn't possibly know about. That suggested a supernatural angle. There was also a scientist who postulated that it was Gaia theory. The Earth itself trying to thin our numbers out. Nothing was confirmed though.
