>Why? Because we already remade almost all of the renaissance era Disney movies and were so disparate we have to use the slop of the 2000s yet, you’re still gonna give us money anyway. We don’t care because we own your fucking childhoods.

>STARING… SEBASTIAN STAN AS TARZAN

A remake of Atlantis the Lost Empire makes the most sense. The original barely even showed the city of Atlantis. Most of the main characters are humans. They really don't need to do much CGI.

God, I am so fucking glad Disney is too skinflint to bother paying the Edgar Rice Burroughs family to be able to use Tarzan again. I don't at all trust them to be able to do anything with him ever again.

It's never happening because they would never pay for the rights.
But here's a headscratcher - how do you cast (at least one) obligatory black person without coming off racist?

Probably like how the 2016 Tarzan did it? Get Samuel Jackson to play a modern black guy hanging around.

Didn't they lose more of Tarzan recently? And his works entered in the public domain of more countries now.

Did they? I thought with how long Disney pushed back the time before things become public domain Tarzan would have several years left still.

Yes especially because the material Disney adapted is from the first book. The only characters who matter are Tarzan, his ape mother, Jane, Kerchak, and Clayton. Those are public domain. Disney doesn't need to worry about paying Edgar Rice at all. In fact I don't think Disney even paid to use Tarzan and Jane during Once Upon a Studio last year because by now the character is public domain enough. And if I remember correctly the most recent Tarzan movie Legend of Tarzan didn't pay the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate to make the film.

Tarzan's copyrights may not be all expired but you can do enough with the property and not even trademarks can stop anything if you use the public domain material.

Tarzan's first book fell into the public domain back in the 80s (the book was originally written in 1912 and stuff from 1912 went public domain in 1988). Even before the copyright extension went forward in 1999, the first 12 Tarzan stories (and the first five films) already fell into the public domain. After stuff started going PD again in 2019, six stories and three films went PD

Disney was probably within their rights to do their own Tarzan without bringing ERB into it, but they worked with them because ERB had the trademarks (which would make doing merchandise easier). Maybe Disney also knew it would be bad optics if they didn't work with ERB and released their own Tarzan around the time when they knew the copyright extension was gonna happen

In the first book yeah. He did. He hanged them as a joke and would screw with tribes he ran into when he was a kid. Eventually he became a chief of a tribe though and he started chilling out with them.

All of Burroughs works went public domain in "life + 70 years" countries.
