Was it really just the lack of marketing that fucked it? I like a lot of the character and creature designs (yes, despite that one profile shot).

That's just the cope media outlets are pushing. Somehow the movie simultaneously made by Disney/Pixar yet obscure, and also no one went to see it, but also everyone saw it and loved it but are just mysteriously staying silent about it.

Pretty much just gaslighting from journalists that you should totally go see it and not make your own opinions.

No. There were tons of trailers and other marketing content pushed... it's just that none of it looked particularly interesting.

No, it's also the Pixar name. That and Disney. The two companies spent the last decade poisoning their brand, so now when people here their name attached to a movie they are going in expecting a hot plate of dogshit. They were fighting an uphill battle the moment they released. And let's face it, the same people that turned the Pixar name to shit are still running it. No way were they gonna pull a miracle out of their butt now.
If this had been released during Pixar's heyday, it would have been seen as an okay movie, not as good as their usual, but passable. Now? It's just more slop. And this is coming from someone who wants to fuck the pink sea-slug alien woman

It was marketed a lot, at least in some channels. I got very bored of the ads.
Problem was, the ads revealed a hollow dullness in the story. Ad 1: boy from Earth goes into space with aliens and has adventures. So fucking what? Ad 2: boy from Earth saves planed by power of laughter. AN IDEA NOBODY HAS EVER THOUGHT OF BEFORE!!! EXCEPT FOR MILLIONS OF HACK WRITERS! It was all giving strong "put together by ChatGPT on an off day" vibes. Nobody wants that.

To Pixar: get someone who isn't Californian to write your next movie. Better yet, someone who isn't American at all and who doesn't live there and isn't a weed-smoking fuck head. Because your ideas are so damn stale. What would be really neat is doing a tragedy, aiming for catharsis rather than happiness, but you're not brave enough for that.

Very bland MC design, but the eyepatch is too uncanny. Shoudl have put a classic pirate patch.

A bit annoyed that Domee Shi is blamed for this movie failure. It's Adrian Molina's baby and he abandonned it by talking the big bosses into directing Coco2 instead.

Can't stand seeing people failing up. For that reason i hope Coco2 bomb.

I think the marketing is slightly to blame, but not fully.
I think also too much competition from other family films like the Lilo & Stitch remake and the How To Train Your Dragon remake. Definitely think more families are flocking to those than Elio. Plus, it’s Pixar’s second space movie in three years, so perhaps people are getting tired of space stories.
I saw the movie yesterday and thought it was pretty cute. Not the best Pixar by any means, but found it more enjoyable than let’s say Elemental, Brave, or Onward (my least favorite Pixar films out of the ones I’ve seen). I wish the communiverse had more development. Also wish we had more scenes with the main villain, as it feels like he’s only in like a third of the movie. But Elio and Glordon’s friendship is cute and I think the scene with Lord Grigon swaddling his son is touching too.
Overall, flawed but still enjoyable at the very end.

No, they failed to appeal to their core demographic.
My nephew is the prime demographic for this, I'm pretty sure he would have 0 fucking interest if I showed him a trailer. Boys these days aren't much different from my generation, in that they want to see cool-looking characters doing cool things.. not this soft wobbly baby dooky.

The movie just looks ugly. The aliens are ugly. The backgrounds are hideous. Every single screenshot I see has the backgrounds as a bunch of blue and purple swirls.

I don't want to see beanface as characters. I don't want to see aliens that look like tapeworms and bedbugs. And I don't want to see a bunch of swirls as backgrounds.

Maybe but it's obviously not a good movie on its own to carry it. That it looks awful and is in that awful art style just didn't help

You mean the $14 million Disney spent on marketing this fugly movie?

>Other big spenders for movies that opened include Paramount Pictures' "Mission Impossible” at $14.3 million (which opened May 23), Disney's “Elio” with $14 million, and Disney’s ”Lilo & Stitch” at $12.6 million (opened May 23).

No one will want to see it for the visuals because it looks like Grub Hub.
No one will want to see it for story because they have no idea what's it about.

The only people I can see being interested are furries with an extremely niche precambrian creatures fetish.
