If you noticed, Shredder actually was reinvented many times. Shredder was never even "serious" until his third incarnation, the live action one, where he was this ultra threatening Darth Vader esque figure

Comics shredder was just a bit villain to springboard the turtles into zanier shit, and cartoon shredder was mostly a comedic baffoon. Later Shredders would be alien slugs and guys in giant mech suits blah blah, but it would seem you know nothing about Shredder other than his design

And thus we arrive at the problem with IDW and it's fans, they're not fans of the properties to begin with no matter how much they swear they are. I knew gay kids, I have gay family members my age, they weren't playing with Transformers or TMNT or G.I. Joe with the rest of us they were sitting with the moms listening to dishing over George Clooney or putting on makeup/high heels and prancing around to amuse them

I still prefer Mirage Shredder and 1990 Shredder. He didn't even need a complex backstory. I hate IDW pretend that IDW Shredder has a tragic fate and deserves sympathy and let him get away with it. Now he's evil again, which make his redemption story a joke.

Cartoon shredder may have been a comedic buffoon, but remember that he was skilled enough that he could solo all 4 turtles in a fight on a regular basis. Well, he could in the Archie series, anyway, which was early on based on the cartoon.
