>tons of great comics were made in Europe
>Americans latch on to the shittiest popular one
Why does this happen?

It's largely based on what you decide to translate and bring over here
We aren't reading Dutch or French or whatever else fucking language you have the comic in only. If you made the effort to translate to English then marketed it during its prime it could have been same level as Smurfs or Scrooge or Tintin

You think a series about blue forest gnomes and a angry jew that lives like a hobo in Scotland makes for a better show?

Hey, you Europoors handed the rights over to Hanna-Barbera. You have no one to blame but yourselves.

I think it makes decent enough entertainment for small children. Not sure why it would need to be better.

The other guy got it right >>149199258 , it was the one /co/ European property that had an actual attempt at being marketed and brought over here. That's pretty much it, we like to think ourselves as objective arbiters of taste but we're in the whims of whatever TV guys thought was good enough to come over here and influence our taste. Same thing with a lot of anime that we shit on and say only spics or other nationalities like but we just simply didn't get access to, so we act cranky.
At least we got Tintin stuff

A NBC executive dumped a bunch of Smurf toys on Joe Barbera's desk and told them to "Make this a cartoon", Joe said "All theses basters look the same" and only got green lit because Bill Hanna said "You rather have another Scooby-Doo clone?" and Hanna Barbera produced to for over 8 years, only getting killed off because NBC was killing off their Saturday Morning line up (1990-1991 were the last years of said line up, it got replaced with Save By The Bell reruns).

Really NBC, then NBC dumped it to Hanna Barbera which kept them alive for 8 years.

the smurfs comics are great, there's plenty of good stories involving life lessons made accessible to little kids whithout being overly dumb. The civil war about language difference is great. the king one too.
