Her real identity was never revealed, because the researchers were afraid (in her stead) that it would turn out poorly, but she was, by all accounts, a happy person.
She is referred to as S.M. to keep her identity private.

One could argue that we all go through shit, so despite her having a colourful life due to (likely) bad choices created by a lack of fear of consequences, she suffered less than most would with a more normal life (as normal doesn't mean bereft of issues)
