In the original draft for this movie, apparently Ming Lee was the more money focused one and wanted to use her daughters abilities to draw up tourism to the shrine which was having severe maintenance problems that they lacked the funding to fix. This was changed to where Mei wanted the money to go to some retarded boy band concert. The shrine is in the final part of the movie but the tourism aspect is dropped.

So literally someone sat down and said "We dont want any real issues in this movie just retarded non concepts like how can we make this an unsubtle metaphor for womanhood."

you don't hurt them, you just use the pain to shock them back to consciousness after they went off into their own head. Be it a tantrum, or just daydreaming in the middle of crossing a busy street.
It'd be cool if we could let people be in their own heads more, but life is dangerous and you have to sacrifice that, associating those behaviors with pain so you reflexively stop doing them.

i can't remember the last time a non comedy tv show actually showcased how this is meant to work. The best I can think of is a bunch of times women slapped men, in 90s superhero-related programs.
