I loved it as a kid, one of my favorites, but didn't really dig it when I tried a rewatch. I still love the movie, though.

Loved it as a kid I even memorized theall the deep lore in the cartoon who was WAY WAY WAY more advanced then the shit in the movie or the comics.

Now it really shows its age however I say it is still fun.

As kid I loved the absolute dark nature (more spoken by the music) of this cartoon. It was far more dark then anything on TV, including body horror.

As a grown up the darkness feels far less extreme then it did to my kid self! However the show has dark moments and motives.

Edge city literally feels like a insane place to live in insane in that dark 90s style.

The show if watched uncensored (!!!) is really something a product of the dark 90s. Something impossible to recreate after the 90s.

The internet whould lose their shit if this was made today:
https://youtu.be/ycQs7kbrj2o

Edge city really feels like a insane dark comic book superhero city.
It is full of unhinged and crazy people.
Literally suicide bombing strippers (Pictured)
insane painters who want to blow up dynamite factories!

And these are the background villains !!!!
The main cast is practically all original characters (Yes Walter is from the comics calm our tits).

I think kablamus is the most peak insane comic book character of all times.
Have a look:

I used to watch it religiously a a kid but it's entire premise really shouldn't be geared toward children. A guy puts on a mask and completely loses all sense of self as he essentially introduces widespread ruin. Like, you'd think it'd be a perfect combination of random hijinks and meaningless slapstick like Beetlejuice but there was something a little darker about The Mask that on review I don't like that I gave so much attention to. Also I don't like the idea of a character sensationalizing smoking to children. I grew up and picked up a smoking habit and partly I have The Mask to attribute credit to that.

>little darker about The Mask
Yes it is dark. Daily reminder that the clay monster (whatever is his name) literally is body horror because every time the mask fights him he gets fucked up and his body gets fucked up.

He was like
>liquefied = no powers only trapped in a clay body
>thrown into the ocean and got fucked up
>Got cut in half and screamed because he is not that kind of a monster who can put himself together.
>Mixed with concrete and = no powers only trapped in a clay body

And the intro episode his friend is body horror because instead of getting cool powers he literally becomes a fish with no powers, he can not even swim, stays like this for the rest of the show.

>Winnie the Pooh
HUH?
>Kablamus
Name any other super hero or villain who has his powers I wait.

>Kablamus
The way he monologues is peak super hero comic behavior.
Also DARK because the first time he inflates and has no control over it you think he will die.

Then we have Peter Pan as interpreted by biblically accurate Tim Burton.

>Smokin
I never smoked in my life and watched the show. Agree on removing smoking from kids shows.

I watched an episode of it on those Spooktober cytube streams last year, and it was pretty funny. The Mask was fighting some weird shadow kid and went into shadow kid's dimension to fight him and kept getting beat up. The Mask put on a superhero costume and lifted some weights, then immediately got beat up again. I laughed so hard. Only ever seen that episode though.

It was entertaining. The animation could get really sloppy in the later seasons, as was common for cartoons after 1995, but it remained fun for its run.

I figure that Walter is a victim of translation to a more children-oriented series. Comic Walter is kind of an asshole who knows he's intimidating and he finds entertainment in flaunting it.
But you can't really have THIS guy in a cartoon, so your easiest choice is to oversimplify it to "big dumb brute"

If you follow this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion, the only thing left for children to watch will be Teletubbies. I loved The Mask and I always thought smoking looked cool (still do), and yet I never smoked. Whenever you show anything negative on screen, some kid is gonna be retarded enough to pick it up, but you can't protect the whole world from itself.

I recommend you watch this one next:

>some weird shadow kid
That is Skillit complete with the song of demented children around him. He is basically Peter Pan as interpreted by 1989s Tim Burton.

Fun fact you can only see in HD he has a clock that has 13 on it. Unbelievable they put this much detail into the animation knowing that it will never be seen by anyone.

PS: Turns out that my memory made him look far more dark then the last time I watched I remember the 13h clock looking far more evil and demented like hyper realistically detailed digits and the handles where like big fat and crooked.

Fun fact, Putty Thing and Fish Guy were parodies of Bill & Ted. Except they were even stupider, and they tried to get spider-man powers by getting themselves irradiated. One of them turned into putty (I forgot exactly how), the other fell into a fish tank in a pet store.
