Is there a name for this kind of artstyle? Like yโ€™know the one that became popular among neckbeards and geeks in the 2000โ€™s, takes influence from both anime and Warner Bros, and is largely associated with geek shit like elves, furries, and fetish art.

General mediocrity and poorly implemented influences don't really amount to an "artstyle"

Funnily enough Dobson is one of the better examples of this style, like he wasnโ€™t the worst artist ever, itโ€™s just that what was holding him back was his inability to take criticism, and you know, the fact that he was a complete retard in general.

Dobson wouldn't be such a lolcow if he weren't such an emotionally immature, insecure douchebag. Guys like him were always the one getting beat up in school, because instead of taking jabs with good humor he was the type who would get pissed off and throw a tantrum. It makes you a magnet for bullies.

Compare this is some of the other people in the OP's image, like Bobsheaux, who, while being a furry gooner and one of the many NostalgiaCritic clones from that bygone era of YouTube, seems like a pretty chill guy.

I'm pretty sure his console war comics were what attracted people to him in the first place. He clearly had a lot of insecurity over his choice for loving Nintendo over the other console makers and probably received somef bullying for it. But then his shitty attitude and cringey strawman comics just made his situation 10 times worse.

So true bro. We live in a just world, and everyone is responsible for their suffering. Next time you have problems, just remind yourself it's all your fault, that'll make everything better.

There's avoidable behavior that makes assholes more eager to attach themselves to you, but the asshole is always in the greater wrong nonetheless. Most people would also say that letting yourself get walked over and saying nothing like you suggest is exactly that kind of behavior.

I know you're going to reply with "well there's a difference between lighthearted jabs and bullying etc. etc.", to which I say it's arbitrary bullshit. As I showed above, you can pass off any insult as a lighthearted jab.

Moral victories are useful for the user but rarely effective elsewhere, anon. "My art may suck but at least I never gave up" is a valid and kinda worthwhile thought, but it tends to hit diminishing returns if externalized.

There are countless examples of OP artstyle being profitable though so I don't know what that has to do with anything. I think you're a little lost in the black hole of taking a joke too literally. The point I was trying to make is that it's not a bad artstyle and it seems unreasonable to be so critical of it.

of all of those examples, dobson's is a lot better looking and refined than the other 5 (ngl, the worst one has to be the bottom right). if i didn't know it was drawn by an egotistical, emotionally immature neckbeard, i would've thought it came from something more official

I've always thought of it broadly as "Early 2000s webcomic" style. It has varying degrees of anime influence, but filtered through how to draw manga books combined more traditional western cartooning. Personally I really miss it. Maybe when nostalgia barrel scraping burns through the Y2K aesthetic we'll see it make a comeback.

Really, I always associated this style with shit like TGWTG, TVTropes, and bad furry/fantasy comics you'd probably find on Bad Webcomics Wiki or something.
Dominic Deegan, Fred Perry, Andrew Dickman, early Chalo/Las Lindas, and maybe Girl Genius are other examples I can think of.

Sabrina Online's a weird one to have here but I kinda get it; I would actually argue EWS's art looks more amateurish and akin to these "styles" nowadays than it did in the 90s. Compare a comic from the late 90s to one of the newer "long form" color ones he's doing now and it's like night and day; way more sterile now.....
