It clearly was written by a western person. All this talk about being free didn't even make sense in the context of the japanese society at the time. Let's say that princess character got her "freedom", what would she do? Be a randon Inn owner in some middle of nowhere village?

Even people hating on the main character's blue eyes, fucking retarded. But then, of course, Fowler was the best written character because he felt like a western dude trying to take over Japan properly.
