If this movie was about a hominid befriending and Alien would it have been better? I can imagine it being where the alien takes him from earth after his family dies and gives him intelligence and they have to go through a bunch of shit and avoid the space police or whatever taking him away. And it ends with him having to go back to normal and be left on earth and promise to always to remember him. Flash forward then hundreds of thousands of years later and it shows the alien in disguise at a museum looking at a early man exhibit and he just says “I miss you buddy”

Basically a bastardized version of an anime face. It isn't even one of those instances where they try to give a character "POC" features that end up making the character look more racist than anything, they'll give this monkey face to white characters as well.
Steven Universe is one of the earlier examples of the monkey face artstyle, Steven himself was an obvious example but plenty of other characters had it as well. It sort of went hand in hand with the "beanmouth" style, you could almost call it beanhead or beanface.
