Thoughts on this?

I think it has really funny individual moments, but as a whole, episode plots kind of linger. I know Simpsons writers worked on this, but the cast feels too small to go for that gag-after-gag style of writing they had.

Season 1 > Season 2, the retool killed the show and made it way too typical 90's sitcom

It’s like proto-Family Guy in a lot of ways.

Isn’t it obvious? Pop culture references and random humor. Just look at Jay’s dad, he’s basically Mayor West.

One time I made a friend watch an episode and asked him what he thought of the show. He said it was “thought-provoking” but not funny. "The Simpsons, now THAT is a funny show" he said.

They started off with the kind of joke-a-minute, anything-goes style of comedy The Simpsons took two or three years to get to. There’s no time to establish any solid stories or relationships because it’s just joke after joke and even though most of the jokes are funny it feels insubstantial. James L. Brooks occasionally interjects his trademark bittersweet moments, but they don’t fit here.

They might have worked things out though if the show had been on Fox from the beginning. Brooks had a contract with ABC and it was a big mistake. ABC treated the show well, they just had nothing to pair it with and it flopped. If it had premiered after The Simpsons it would have lasted a few years, but by the time it got to Fox it was damaged goods.

>"randumb" humor

literally like half the show is pop culture jokes, except actually pretty clever and funny

there was a time where i said it was gone too soon but looking back, season 2 was a big step down from season 1 and i don't even wanna mention the webseries. you can tell al jean is in charge because just like when he showran the simpsons and half the jokes became 'homer is fat', half the jokes here increasingly so in season 2 are 'jay is fat (and ugly!)'

overall an enjoyable watch but the cracks in the formula were already showing early on

It feels more like one of those cases where the original did the concept so much better than anyone who tried to replicate it later.
Family guy wishes it was the improved version, but it's just a lame imitation.

I liked it, but I always thought it was inconsistent with how people viewed Jay's opinion on movies. Some episodes have people view his critiques as gospel whereas in others they don't give him the time of day.

Great series. Deserved at least two more seasons. Jay and his cast should've been folded into the Simpsons when the show was cancelled. The webisodes aren't canon and don't exist so pretend this last sentence isn't real.

One of the only shows I've rewatched every 5 years or so. Sadly, because of the joke topics, it has very little to offer a younger audience.

>>149258027
>Random humor
It was more absurd than random. Things still fit the characters, like Franklin's hallucinations from a pickled brain, or Duke's splurging on stuff to show off his wealth (especially hick shit like the jug band bears).

It holds up well if you over look some things. Animation quality is jank at times and you can tell the lip sync wasn't for some of the recorded lines but the writing and great VA work more than makes up for it.

I watched some the clips people posted in this thread and they still made me laugh so I guess it's time for a re-watch. I always associate this show with the first summer I had after graduating high school since it along with Mission Hill and Clerks: The Animated Series were all I watched during that time.

It bums me out that there isn't a single Simpsons alum who can get out of their former job's shadow.

I guess Greg Daniels did, but he had Mike Judge so I don't know if I'd even count that.
