What's your favorite design for any given comic book superhero?

I don't think he ever had the shoulder pads in the comics, but the combo of shoulder pads+straps+pouches looked pretty cool on Cap.

I used to prefer the modern soldier look, but as time goes on I've come to prefer the classic look. I realize at it's core, Captain America's design was never meant to be anything close to a real soldier from his time period, but more embrace symbology. Buccaneer boots and gauntlets like an old time adventurer. Scalemail like a knight. A classic round shield in the age of guns. An eagles wings adorning his head like a winged helmet of a god.
He's closer to Columbia or Uncle Sam- a idealization of an idea. The look of all these classic heroic figures filtered through an American superhero.

Trying to interpret that as a soldier's gear can be cool, but it can end up feeling like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.He starts losing these grand elements that shouldn't be secondary but part of the point.

I don't think that's the point of ultimate cap specifically tho. i think its trying to modernize what Kirby was doing in the 60s
the sailor boots weren't as extreme, the mask looked like it could be an aviator cowl, etc. It wasn't a complete infantryman look,of course not, but it was militaristic in a sense in conjunction with the Uncle Sam imagery.

I very much think almost the entirety of the original ultimate line was trying to be as UN comic booky as possible. Inf act not just Ultimate, Marvel in general felt like it was trying to be more cinematic. Like everyone working in was trying to to get into TV or film.

Frank's classic look with the white gloves and boots.
It looks its best with that old inking style that gives blacks a bluish tone for shading.

That could be a true too, I can see how one could see Kirby's later Cap as more grounded compared to the initial look.
Part of what made it click for me was seeing Kirby's colonial Captain America, and how the boots and gauntlets, while more detailed,aren't that far from how he was drawing them for modern Cap
With Hitch's cap, he's more thinking in lines of how to make those elements work for reality- though I will say looking at it again I don't think the modern Ult Cap look he gets after he's revived really looks all that tacticool compared to how movie designs would get. Like even the movie wouldn't attempt the scale texture until the end, and only in a half-assed way.

I think I get what it's going for- it's meant to give an explanation for why he'd have a cowl in the first place. Otherwise he'd just have the helmet. The helmet gives him the "A", and the cowl comes from the mask, and since the goggles are a standard part of that sort of mask it's there. When it's streamlined for his mask in his modern gear, the goggles aren't needed because it's superfluous to the look.

as far as Hitch goes, I think he's doing more of a rule of cool thing then a strictly realist. I doubt there was much more thought put into than "he's a soldier, a super soldier" which is why it commands a certain nostalgia and authenticity that's missing from modern cap art.

I get what they were trying to evoke but it still didn't mesh well with the design. The leather helmet under the steel helmet just feels so unnecessary and just makes it so he's basically wearing three helmets at the same time if we're counting the liner..
