Wally was a longtime fan-favorite supporting character in the Flash comics who stepped up to take his beloved uncle and mentor's mantle after he sacrificed himself to save the universe, and his stories significantly expanded the Flash mythos.

Kyle was a 90s-flavored OC dripping with HIP ATTITUDE who immediately pushed to the limelight as the last Green Lantern, and he got shilled at the expense of the fan-favorite Hal Jordan going evil, murdering the entire supporting cast full of fan-favorite characters, and destroying several unique aspects of the Green Lantern mythos for the sake of making Kyle DC's ninth attempt at having their own Peter Parker.

Hal has done some crazy things but 9 times out of 10 these incredible feats of power circle back to him being too determined not to give up, the core of what Green Lanterns are. And like you said, his occasional bone headed nature and cockiness are character traits that help even out his positive qualities. Kyle is just overly wanked in terms of feats, and his biggest flaw is just failing to save his girlfriend

Unrelated but God of Light Hal had the best costume

I hope Gunn eventually introduces Jessica Cruz. Great newbie Lantern to be an audience vessel in terms of explaining lore/exposition. Actually I'd be fine if the DCU Lantern team was

Tbh, this was becuase one wally was always more popular than kyle, and two, kyle wasnt erased, he was kept around just his role diminished.

Three the GL book became more popular under Johns's tenure than before, so the new fans outnumbered the kyle fans too.
