it's not. You cant get away with drawing fanart of your own character and build an audience. Fanart gets an audience because the original IP put in the hard work of building it for you to draw from.
You have to, you can, you should, produce an entire full length animated show showing us who your character is, what they do, why we should care, and making us fall in love. THEN we'll all swoon when you post a try hard pinup with no background on your twitter.

yeah mostly, it actually seems to be pretty complex.
On the one hand I think there's just a bias on what gets trending, and that it trends to art that's very simple and appeals to the algorithms to the point of losing all soul
On the other, making something unique and perhaps even great doesn't give you instant right to attention
A lot of good (and bad) art get put to the wayside. that where marketing and other factors come in.
I get the resentment, but ultimately having that outlook on your and other peoples art seems to be hurtful and unproductive.

I think his move to digital art removed a lot of nuances from his drawings.

Additionally I recall that I was able to look over his twitter when that comic first went viral, the problem I see was that he wasn't behaving in a way that makes connections with other accounts. I couldn't find it again, but my impression was that he rarely post new arts, only retweets his old arts and that one link to buy his comic. He doesn't really retweet or interact with other people's art or put it on his timeline. Even with art like his, if he presents himself in a way that communicates interesting ideas from his characters, he could easily get a following, but there really isn't much people can get by looking over their twitter timelines. I am aware that there are at least 2 artist that does shitty MSpaint doodle comics that regularly gets thousands of engagements with art less complex than his, and its mostly strength of their ideas.

Having done a few comic crowdfunders, people underestimate how much planning you have to do for advertising. It pays to have everything lined up on who you'll show your stuff to, which demographs will enjoy it, how exactly you can get it to them and how much you'll spend on ads of your stuff.

The sad reality will be you have a post that gets 1k likes and a bunch of retweets/reposts and only have 10 people contribute out of that. The people I've seen have easier times with campaigns aren't the ones going BUY MY BOOK on social media but the guys who drop 100+ on ads via reels/tiktok and do a few interviews with set people.
