Did Jim Davis actually do the Garfield paintings, of did he just stick his name on them?

He did the Garfield paintings. The man can actually draw pretty well. Once he hit it big he took it easy but he has a lot more talent and vision than people give him credit for.

a lot of the big newspaper strip guys were serious artists. i guess it makes sense, if you're capable of doing some huge overdetailed thing, you could also crank out 30 smaller, less-detailed things a month

I don't know about Jim Davis but most of the time when you see (insert creator here) in stock art or a tie-in thing he did jack shit

It makes me mad that people assert that Jim Davis was some kind of hack/talentless guy. He found a market and went for it full-force, just because he tried to make money doesn't mean he wasn't a talented or smart motherfucker. You can criticize his "artistic intent" of making a comic specifically to make him rich, but I think most people are just mad it didn't happen to them. Despite the sell-out nature of it, he put a lot of time and effort into making Garfield a phenomenon.

He stuck his name on them while one of his many assistants did the actual work. Jim Davis hasn’t actually worked on the Garfield strip in the last 40-some years, close to 45.

these are good. When did he make them? they remind me of the paintings Carl Barks did of Scrooge Mcduck .

Garfield was pretty ambitious for it's first ten years but the backlash to the abandoned house arc and the success of the Garfield and friends tv show/it making Davis set for life, caused him to go onto autopilot mode and basically all of the potential for the strip and characters was squandered.
