Would anything have changed if Warner decided to name the main media franchise Merrie Melodies instead of Looney Tunes? Should they have done so?

It wouldn't have caught on. Merrie Melodies isn't a bad title, but LOONEY TUNES is much more creative and appealing, even though they're synonyms. Merrily We Roll Along is the best theme, though.

They actually used “Merrie Melodies” for their reissue program; every cartoon was labeled Merrie Melodies regardless of which series it was in.

But Looney Tunes is a better name (arguably it’s better than the Silly Symphonies name it was ripping off) so it’s the name that caught on among fans and eventually became the official name of the whole franchise.

I never got the difference between Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes, and I've had to have seen at least 300+ shorts.
I always liked the opening music for Merrie melodies more.

For a while (not originally) Merrie Melodies was the only one in color and some characters were exclusive to one series or another (Porky was LT, Bugs was MM).

After Looney Tunes switched to color there was no difference at all except the theme music and cartoons were just randomly assigned to a series. They continued to exist as separate series because that’s how they were sold to movie theatres.

Adding on, Merrie Melodies was also the designation for WBs one-shot cartoons, while Looney Tunes was used more for whatever recurring characters came along (debuting either in LT or MM). Then Bugs Bunny debuted, and that's when the two series began to become one and the same.

This. Looney Tunes captures the [relatively] edgy nature of the franchise better, plus it sticks out more. One of the few times alliteration was NOT the answer.

Yes, that would improve the movie. FYI, it would have been in the Casablanca scene, you know, the one currently in the movie that makes no sense. Why the fuck is Yosamite Sam playing piano in Casablanca? Makes no sense.
