I've noticed that very few cartoon fans seem to care about the lack of subtext, irony, thematic depth, or philosophical engagement in cartoons. Is this why cartoons are struggling to produce a work of artistic merit? An analogy might be the television serial, which had no merit until Twin Peaks (and no serious engagement from the elites until The Sopranos). When is animation going to have its Twin Peaks moment? Note that comic books have arguably achieved this milestone already, though comic book readers seem content to wallow in mediocre storytelling.

the golden age of animation already passed, we now have to deal with the dregs, well that would be my response if i wasn't busy with life in general.

Try to earnestly engage with a neurotypical person about the plot of any "juvenile" piece of media that isn't Pixar-coded and they'll short circuit.

Because manchildren making video essays have decided that a cartoon having literally anything that isn't "talking butts in buttsville" counts as artistic merit and proof they're actually a more mature medium with not-kid friendly content, and refuse to actually engage with media meant for anyone above the age of 14 due to a self-educated belief that media for anyone over 14 is either just sex, violence, or boring.

Sorry but you grew up after the golden age of television and are in the post-apocalyptic slop era. Consider looking into non-english language works instead if you still value the idea of watching contemporary works.

Do you even watch the good cartoons, such as Scavengers Reign or Common Side Effects? Or are they too complex for you?

It'll never happen. Animation as a medium is seen as inherently juvenile by normalfags, ergo any piece of media that tries to do something truly artistic will receive little to no recognition.
I just watched Anomalisa for the first time a few weeks ago and it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, and I'm really upset I'd never heard about it until very recently.

A lot of deep cartoons like Xavier Renegade Angel and Rat Boy Genius are too much for the average cartoonfag who prefers Steven Universe and Gravity Falls

usually the point of entertainment is to just sit back, relax, and have fun, not for us pseudointellectuals to go into some random deep dive with some overanalyzing essay

i like looking at 19th century paintings of naked women like picrel, not because i appreciate the philosophical or thematic depth, but it's just nice to look at

You guys need to make up your minds because whenever a cartoon tries to tackle something more philosophical you bitch and dismiss it on the basis of being "pretentious" (cope word for not understanding the material, it's ok Timmy there's nothing wrong with being confused)

Unfortunately picrel was one of the few deep Adventure Time episodes that actually worked.
