>>149290760 (OP)I saw it. It's solidly mediocre. I saw someone say it's a movie about nothing, and I totally get it.
One recent post I saw said that Pixar movies use to be about being a parent, but new ones are about being a kid; Elio does both and neither. There's a lot of good moments but they feel like they're from different moments. The opening is really good, but Elio becomes a totally different character after it, and is kind of a shithead for the beginning of the movie (and not in a cute way or a way you feel bad for him.) There's a "hype" moment where HAM radio people all around the world help them, but it's really rushed and feels like somebody just wanted a big "everybody helps" moment that's unearned.
The aliens all seem like fucking moron babies, especially the nerd ones. The only alien I like is the little slug guy (Gleremy? whatever his name is) and their relationship is really cute. They play well off each other and it's kind of adorable that the little gay romance in the relationship is between a human and a fat slug. Well, the mind-reading stingray lady is kind of hot too.
The aunt gets some okay moments and it was cute that she didn't just embrace the clone as "better Elio" and immediately suspected him, and for his part, clone Elio was fun because he was immediately chill with everything.
I wouldn't call it "bad" in a way that's overly incompetent but it's bad in the way that it's not good, which is probably worse. It's technically competent but narratively a hackjob. It's no, say, Suicide Squad level of badly put together but you can see how it's a bunch of scripts hacked together in a way that makes no sense.
It'll probably be worth streaming one time if you're curious when it drops in like a month, but it's not worth seeing twice.
