It definitely started that way in season 1, but that was also the bad thing. I don't even remember the joke that caused it, but it was a deep comic reference that was really funny. If you knew the reference.
But my sister and mother both laughed as well. I asked them why they thought it was funny and they both said something along the lines of "look at those stupid geeks pretending they're smart". They weren't laughing from the joke but at the characters for making it and everyone who got the joke. It's the only time I can think of that I was genuinely insulted.

I recently finished watching Adventure Time and I liked the finale. Is this a controversial opinion here? Yeah the dream scene could've been better but I wouldn't say it's bad
