>>149295346What's silly is that Jeph has caved to social pressures plenty of times. He has shown almost no integrity when it comes to the writing of this comic.
And of the people in the comic who want Anh to stick it to her dad, we have:
Roko, used to be a cop, left the force because some of her coworkers were bad eggs and the bad vibes got her down (then her body was pancaked, and the only reason she survived was the law enforcement grade reinforcement of her core). She now works at a local AI rights nonprofit, one that was horribly mismanaged before she showed up and is funded entirely by donations, and thus could ostensibly be shut down at any moment.
Beeps, works at the same place (and a sex toy product testing gig that's non-sexy). So semi in the same boat as Roko, but also not because sex sells.
Bubbles and Faye, only barely keeping afloat with their business and generally strapped for cash, and it's been shown that Faye's diet has suffered from this. Faye was legit jealous of the business a child is getting from doodling on AI bodies, and sometimes Faye's cut of that is the only profit they bring in.
So most of them have no financial security at all. While they are living their current lifestyles due to strongly held principles or consequences of big choices they have made, generally speaking, those decisions didn't have as large a financial downfall as Anh's situation might entail. The closest is Faye, who went from an okay self-sufficient wage to being roughly at a poverty level of income.
Meanwhile, Anh had an extremely high quality of life, and can continue to do so... as long as she doesn't further ostracize her asshole dad over a few testimonials she heard at a repair shop.
