Shrek 1 has more merit. It was a huge improvement over Antz in the animation department (human skin, hair, fur, bigger sets, lava, fire, mud, milk, beer, etc)

Shrek 2 is a good movie with a ton of laughs, but I'll always prefer Antz and the original Shrek

DreamWorks' original plan was "2D movies/CG movies/stop-motion movies", but it didn't take long before they switched to "CG movies only"
