Why was Adam West portrayed as senile in animation?
Especially his own roles

He couldn’t get much work due to typecasting, and he made a living late in life as a good sport who was willing to make fun of himself (The Simpsons) or play characters who were a thinly disguised version of him (Batman: TAS).

I feel like The Simpsons was the template for a lot of the later appearances but it’s a fairly standard gag for celebrities to portray themselves as insane, like Leonard Nimoy the same season.

Not being able to take the piss out of yourself is a sign of being a fuckwit.
Besides, Mayor Adam West would've been a fun role. The Adam We joke lives rent free in my head.

>I feel like The Simpsons was the template for a lot of the later appearances

It was way more than that
There was the Lookwell pilot that Conan O'Brien worked on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lookwell
A lot of people in the entertainment industry probably saw that
That Mr Plow episode you mentioned was in 1992
The Johnny Bravo episode was in 1997

Seth MacFarlane talked about how they got Adam West on Family Guy, starting around 0:47:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrRUn_9L-Z8
That they just found him funny in person and wanted to do more with him

Bill Maher said he even got Adam West to do some sketches for Politically Incorrect but I don't know which episodes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07sGfkokfdg shows Adam voicing Mayor West

He was a good sport and some people took advantage of him, for all that some of you here praise people like Seth McFarlane, look at how the creators/producers/writers at those Fox Animation shows treated West versus how say even a hack like Chuck Lorre treated him on a far more popular/highly rated and successful show like Big Bang. Another thing to look at is how he was treated by DC productions made by WB in his later years, such as DCW shows, or even the animated Adam West direct to DVD movie adaptations of the '66 TV show that WB Animation made.

Often an actor may see a script but lines are cut or they (especially in animation) are given dialogue without necessarily seeing the context or having any say in the finished product. So while he may have been open to 'taking the piss' he might not have been happy with the finished segment of something.

Big Bang Theory was in 2016 when people already started reevaluating Adam West though
The DVDs for the Batman 1966 show were finally announced around early 2014 and the first volume released late 2014

It's called parsing, son.
It's also called logical thinking.
You follow an argument and either refute or let it convince you.
Just asking 'so' is the same thing as being an 8 year old and saying, "I know you are but what am I."

tl;dr actors perform scenes many times -
a director, script writer, camera person, even an editor,
ALL would have FAR more to say about how a performance looks in a finished work

because he's a wash up who's only legacy was batman
that was the only reason why boomer writers brought him back in their shows and he's not ashamed of that
there's probably a lot more but you have
>Simpsons
a guy who still thinks he's still batman and thinks kids should care about him over the new batman films at the time.
>Johnny Bravo
no mention of Batman but he acts like he's some sort of hero when helping Johnny. the second appearance he's just a tv host
>family guy
not a superhero but they really liked the idea of adam west is deluded and make more jokes around that and only make seldom references to him playing a superhero
>FOP
washed up actor who actually thinks he's a superhero
>Spongebob
he only voiced young mermaid man but he's obviously a reference. mermaid man is an actual superhero who's washed up and senile

the fun thing about his characters is his self awareness . like he knows they only brought him in because of boomer writer nostalgia and just plays up the idea that irl he's a washup. the idea of a deluded superhero is just funny

i don't think you'd see any other formally famous person self roast or let writers roast him as much as west did. most guest appearances treat them with kids gloves or are just vanity projects

When I was a kid I was under the impression that Adam West went mental and started believing that he was Batman, leading to him always being portrayed as a nutcase. It's pretty clear that he was a one trick pony and could only be a caricature of himself to gain a following. He was never really a big deal but he always found a footing in media up until his death so you gotta give him props for that.

It's less that they saw it and more that Conan O'Brien personally worked on the Simpsons from 1991 to 1993, and was close friends with the episode's writer, Jon Vitti. While it was Vitti that pushed for West to appear, I wouldn't be surprised if Conan had an influence on him for what the details for that appearance would be, or even just flat out pitched the joke himself.

Interesting to note the whole reason West got the Batman role was because he was playing a James Bond parody in Quick commercials, and they liked how he could play ridiculous situations straight. so in a sense it's been his forté since before Batman, even.

Bring a good straight men, in ridiculous situations, is one thing. James Earl Jones is another good example of someone who went on Big Bang and agreed to poke fun at himself but nothing he was asked to do (or how the scenes were edited or cut) made him look 'ridiculous') even if some of it was definitely absurd and joking. OTOH, what the Berlanti people wrote for Teri Hatcher and especially Kevin Sorbo was just embarrassing fan service that wasn't worth their self-respect or likely the paycheck.

People in this thread are making it sound like the family guy character was the real Adam West. Mayor Adam West is just a dude who happens to be named Adam West, voiced by Adam West. They aren't portraying the actual Adam West. That's the joke. He's just a very strange man who is the mayor of the small city, and shares a name with a 60s actor.
