>it's about how the author was an insane loser and shitty 90s disney films were way better

What the fuck? It's literally the coolest thing ever, how do people not like it?

I thought most of the reviews were "This film has some stunning as fuck animation, but the butchering of it killed anything of worth". You can tell the cut they released as a response to Disney's Aladdin.

I dont know what shows you are watching, but the ones ive seen are all positive towards it, at least the recobbled cut, and they say it was a shame it wasnt finished to Richard Williams.

the problem is how many youtube channels are people with a legit interest in going down the rabbit hole of x subject vs. someone summarizing wikipedia and a couple archived news articles that should take 5 minutes painfully spread out over an hour for engagement and ad revenue? however the theatrical/studio release did take a big dump on the artistic aspects of the animation, but thats a discussion on executives vs artist.

The Thief and the Cobbler is very much style over substance. Anyone who's actually seen it can agree.

I've watched the film multiple times, and there was never a point where I said "this needs more substance". Every single scene is really fascinating.

The film could have been a classic, if never a commercial succes, if Williams had only been a better record keeper and less of a perfectionist. You can't spend almost 30 years on a project working solely on animation without a finished script. He let things go off the rails early, and never stopped to put things back on track, just tried to bullrush some stunning animation segments, but couldn't even complete all of those due to his overwhelming perfectionism.

I never watched it, but I think the guy cared too much about the animation medium for something that would have obviously failed and make kids bored, at that point why even make it, animation is a product, not an art form

Running a feature with no deadline was a bad fit. He might have finished it with someone else to fix the story and rein him in while he obsessed over the animation. “Prologue” is a fitting endcap to his master career.

Working without a script is fine. In Miyazaki movies they basically just storyboard a bunch of random stuff and go with whatever they feel like as they're making it. It's the same thing. It's not a bad film just because X character doesn't do Y action in act 2. It's stupid to look at films like that. Richard Williams said a bunch of times that it's supposed to be a dream fairy tale, so trying to say it's bad because it acts with a different prose from other films is wrong.

i liked the mirimax version or whatever one it was from the 90s with the voice overs, the thief had some pretty funny lines.

trying to watch the "restored" cut or whatever it was with no theif voices and the much more sinister music was almost unwatchable, made a fun, mezmerizing movie feel almost demonic, and hollow.

i dont care if it didnt align with the original intention of the film, its a better movie and all the best animation bits are still in there.

It's beautiful but because of technical ability and patience. This is a storytelling medium. If he just wants to animate insanely difficult stuff and put it on display as little vignettes, I feel like he could've gone that route. I feel like Williams didn't quite know how to put himself out there as an artist other than the mainstream avenues of, "I have to make stuff through a studio process".

Richard Williams was an unbelievably talented motherfucker but his biggest downfall was his absolute inability not to be a perfectionist for every single detail of every production he had a hand in.
I'm not saying the guy deserved to have his film ripped from his hands, but he did bring it on himself by not understanding that he couldn't just waste thousands of dollars redrawing everything because he didn't like one detail.
