Director was angry that his first film, about a mentally ill man who falls through the cracks of society was associated with mentally ill men who feel like they are also falling through the cracks of society. So he made a film to humiliate them and tell them how pathetic they are and how society doesn't care about them.

It got a sequel.

But why did you think getting this across by making 75% of this new film an exposition dump of the previous film with people giving commentary on the subtext anything anyone, even people who agree with you, want?

It's not like Watchmen or Specs OPS where it introduces new questions and ideas of what it tears down. It's this lame hypocrisy where the film mocks people for wanting more of the same- But then never actually gives anything new either. It's just more of the same but with the director wagging their finger.

Todd Philips didn’t want to make a sequel and only did this for money and so he could have the Heath Ledger Joker kill Pheonix Joker (he always wanted to tie his movie to TDK. He even wanted Pheonix Joker to originally give himself the ledger scars in the first Joker movie).

Pheonix took over the production and was the one who wanted the movie to be a Musical.

Joker 2 was actually a rare movie that manages to successfully condemn its immoral subject matter and get people turned off on it, like Requiem for a Dream

Most other media ends up valorizing its condemnable subject matter so you end up with shit like cyberpunk media that glorifies the dystopia and gets people pumped for it, Moore not realizing he made Rorschach a role model, people idolizing Scarface etc

The first film was just a ripoff of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, when he had to tell an original story it became immediately clear he was a charlatan and a hack.

Honestly, the first one was only as successful as it was because Zoomers haven't seen Scorsese films. After I told my fiance that and showed her TD and KoC she stopped liking Joker.

You do know to fully get the movie, you have to watch every Scorsese movie, every Todd Phillips movie, and have a working knowledge of Joker lore. The beginning of the movie references both Scorsese's first movie (Mean Streets) and Phillips's first movie (Hated: The GG Allin Story.) It is a brilliant film, it is Todd's Paul's Boutique.
