It seems to be a fairy typical kids movie outside of bad guy is the new not entirely cute girl or cute best friend's dad the eye patch was only temporary to avoid eye infection but I kept seeing messages about it supposedly being horrible work or something been even before it starts to come out. I'm nowhere near an expert on how successful movies are but the biggest problem she to be how many people were in the theater not a lot when I went to see it today so what's supposed to be the issue?

>fairy typical kids movie

That's really below what should be expected from a Pixar movie.

>What is beanmouth?
A specific animation art style in which characters have bean-shaped mouths like pic related from another Pixar recent movie. Earliest forms of "beanmouth" appeared many years ago in some older theater shorts and in the 1980's or so with some random anime and Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit, etc.).

In 2008, beanmouth began creeping up in American 2D animation with a few specific episodes of Flapjack. In 2010, Adventure Time and Fish Hooks began using this beanmouth art style prominently. Since the 2010's, several 2D animated western shows like Steven Universe, Star vs the Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, and Baby Shark's Big Show began using this art style to a point where it became oversaturated which like that Corporate Memphis art style used by too many businesses and graphic design firms.

One thing to note is that all those 2000's shows that used beanmouth were low-budget, 2D animated shows on cable and PBS which had strict deadline. However, that would change thanks to specific Pixar directors. Supposedly, directors for Luca, Turning Red, Elio, and Win or Lose wanted to use this beanmouth art style for big-budget, CG animated Pixar productions instead of Pixar's regular art style from earlier Pixar releases. This not only led to a somewhat abrupt change in Pixar's art style, but it also exposed an unflattering look for beanmouth because it looks uglier in big-budget, highly detailed CGI than it already does in low-budget 2D animation.

The movie was fine, if not a little dry at the start. The space stuff was more interesting. Having the parents be dead was unnecessary. It wasn't a terrible movie , though. Needed space battles.

first. zero marketing, I only knew this thing even existed because people talked about it flopping.

second. wrong marketing, there is very little of the space alien bullshit shown in the ads. the only ads I saw were very short and focused on elio eyepatch guy.

third. disney brand is in the gutter and people refuse to watch their products on ideological basis. they need legwork to bring people back on their side, otherwise people don't care

fourth. character design. It resembles previous woke products of disney. seriously, what were they thinking with the blue eyepatch? this enhances all the previous problem.

fifth. the title, together with the rest it tells me you are going to see some chill, slow-paced movie with a reflective take on life or some existential problem, and people don't care about that. something like alien-elio or elio-alien would already have been much better, communicate the nature of the movie, you are going to see shit about aliens, and as alliteration wich is catchy.

anyway, I'm not a /co/ poster this was on homepage

What's the problem with the eye patch? It was an important part in the story of the movie and it wasn't something permanent just to avoid infection. after a fight.

Pretty much. I've only heard about this hatred towards beanmouth when I started lurking /co/ a couple years ago. I haven't watched cable since at least 2010, so the only 2000's beanmouth shows I heard of back then were Adventure Time, Fish Hooks, and apparently certain Flapjack episodes.
