I really like that Robin plays such a key part in this story.

Have you read this comic? The whole plot is about Superman being trapped in an imaginary world where Krypton survived, but still is very troubled.
To free himself Superman had to let go of his nostalgia and realize he preferred Earth.

This line is the natural conclusion to the storyline of the book. It's a great example of why Alan Moore is such a competent writer

There's also the joke that the Black Mercy that caused the issue is a plant and here Superman is presented with another plant as a gift. It's a joke that he just got done with a plant so maybe it is for the best this plant is dead on top of the realization that maybe it is for the best that Krypton exploded and his dad didn't join the KKKK (Krypton Ku Klux Klan.)

Yeah, the colors they chose to look good on old newsprint look way too bright on better paper and digital. Easy solution there is to just use darker colors.

yes but Morrison won by somehow forcing this interpretation as the only meanwhile Superman story that exists in the public consciousness for whatever reason.

also this interpretation isn’t mutually contradictory, it could be “for the best” that krypton was destroyed so that it could be reborn as a greater world in a better time as new krypton; it goes back to the futurist aspirations of Siegel and relations to cosmism.

Good point. This is one of the things that annoys me about the whole "Krypton had it's chance, I'm a human etc" narrative that emerges post crisis is it sort of irons everything out into a soft liberal "just be nice to people and everything will be ok" pablum.

The whole Superman represents hope thing rings pretty hollow to me without Siegel's idea that he represents, by coming from such an advanced world, a better future. By contrasting Krypton and Earth in such a sharp negative fashion, I think you rob the character of a lot of his intrigue.

Tangentially related but the Sphinx is also an immovable object confronting the unstoppable force Superman and it's his attempt at just diffusing the situation.
