This is one of the things that annoys me about the whole "Krypton had it's chance, I'm a human etc" narrative that emerges post crisis is it sort of irons everything out into a soft liberal "just be nice to people and everything will be ok" pablum.
The whole Superman represents hope thing rings pretty hollow to me without Siegel's idea that he represents, by coming from such an advanced world, a better future. By contrasting Krypton and Earth in such a sharp negative fashion, I think you rob the character of a lot of his intrigue.
