What do you think about the latest big status quo shakeup in the webcomic Ennui GO!?

We're 2,106 pages in at this point with time having progressed at the same rate as the real world over the course of about 10 years now.
There's still a ways to go before part 2 concludes if it will be the same length as part 1, so this change will have a large impact on the rest of part 2.

More than you know. None of the old guard likes the idea of their proud, esteemed martial culture falling into the trends of the merchants. Even if it technically makes them more powerful than they ever were there's no honor in it, no real personal risk for true glory.

Like the first panel was actually kind of humorous and then its 3 panels of non-comedic violence. Being the butt of a joke is a-okay if the joke is actually good.

I mean organized criminal syndicates have been running horse racing and other such gambling activities for over a century at this point anon. That was even the case in the US up until recently, and us moving away from that system has arguably made thing worse.
At the same time the Yakuza specifically have had their toes in the gaming sphere, see that time Sega hired them to kidnap a developers sisters so he'd stop trying to jump ship to Nintendo.
This honestly makes sense as a natural conclusion to such a groups activities.

Yes, there's a plot with continuity.
It started off more of a gag-a-day or weird humor comic with a premise of suddenly having more money than you could ever spend, but just as much depression. The weirdos introduced for each gag stuck around and became characters. Then things happen, either external or as a consequence of the characters' actions and they have to deal with them.
Then it shifted to a new main character in part 2 and got even more focused.

It's one of my favorite webcomics right now.
I like how it does big change ups to the status quo every so often that actually matter and have repercussions.
The characters are entertaining, it's nice that they have their own motivations/wants/desires and aren't all set pieces for the story they're in.
The way magic works on belief that they are all aspects of a dream a higher power is having is interesting and does more with it than other stories with similar concepts did.
Weaving the different comics from Doc's past into the big one is fascinating from the perspective of watching the way one tells a story evolve and change over time.
