I will forever stand by the belief that Rick & Morty has done heavy damage to the adult animation industry, every adult cartoon since it has to have the most bland artstyle imaginable. Adult animation before then, even the worst ones, had a variety unique artstyles, Clone High, Drawn Together, Sit Down Shut Up, Father of the Pride, Allen Gregory, God the Devil and Bob, sure Brickleberry predates Rick & Morty but that show was just a direct Family Guy ripoff. Then R&M happened and every adult cartoon began looking like shit.

Why can't they make anything that looks cool? Why are they afraid of being cool? Why does everything have to be soft, round, and gay looking? I miss edginess from the 1990s. It was cringy in its self-seriousness but at least it was sincere in its cringe, it didn't have to be ironic or self-effacing to have characters dress in black and to have super heavy shadows on everything with glowing eyes. You could have a heavy impactful moment without somebody farting or doing a prat fall to undercut it.

I am forced to consume Japanese animation, French animation, Chinese animation, even Mexican animation, anything but American or Canadian animation, for the dearth of anything serious or ambitious to watch. It's nothing but animated comedies for glassy-eyed normalfags and adult sized children here. I am forced to read subtitles like a weeaboo. I am driven to this by the sheer lameness of animation in my country.

Because it takes way more effort, even from a writing standpoint. It's way easier to slightly copy something and subvert it as a parody/satire than it is to write a unique story. Art-wise, it's easier to make something loose and comedic than something serious with actual action or stakes because everything has to look good else the immersion is broken. Most suits don't care to invest extra money on something that isn't a tried and true way to generate money.

Beanmouth is a short-hand, the same way "calarts style" is a short-hand, and it's a shorthand for samey, often shit art.
Gravity Falls and Adventure Time kind of get a pass, partly because they did it earlier on before everyone got sick of it, but also because they had interesting stories to tell and weren't gay about it. The problem is how many shows try and fuse bean mouth and rubber hose, and it ALWAYS comes from insufferable, faggy LA types. Look at Nimona, lazy art (if you can't be bothered to constantly draw chainmail, DON'T PUT YOUR CHARACTER IN IT), poor background work, and absolutely garbage anatomy, sometimes the characters have elbows and knees, sometimes they wander around on skinny noodles. Look at the hands, crappy squiggles with no wrist to separate the hand from the rest of the arm.
It's just laziness.

Other 90’s adult cartoons had artstyles that managed to separate themselves from kids shows, Beavis and Butthead looked more semi-realistic, South Park looked more janky, Family Guy was made to look Simpsons-like (Seth McFarlane didn’t normally draw like this in his other works mind you), this kind of adult-oriented artstyle trend continued into the 2000’s, there were some rare exceptions like Clone High, which had an artstyle reminiscent of that UPA-inspired look seen in most kids shows at the time.

However thanks to Rick & Morty, all adult cartoons now have to be rigged and have thin ass outlines so kids don’t watch them, you could make an artstyle well animated AND unappealing towards kids, look at Adult Swim stuff like SuperJail, Smiling Friends, King Star King, and YOLO for example, however due to the former being cheaper most would just go that route instead.
