Hey /co/, how's it going?

I'm melting in a heatwave in a country that hasn't learn to cope with much beyond the low to mid 20s. Anyway, let's have a quick eurocomics scanlation storytime.

This is something I've been meaning to typeset for a long time, one of the comics adaptations of Stefan Wul's books. He's probably best known in English for writing the book that the animated film Fantastic Planet was based on, OMS en serie. Some of the other books based on his works are available in English too, Niourk, Trapped on Zarkass, Temple of the Past.

Honestly, the story of this book is nice, but nothing groundbreaking, what got me to do it was the art, I love this style, reminds me of Bernie Wrightson on Frankenstein or Andreas on Cromwell Stone. The rip this is typeset onto is very large, much reduced for the storytime, but final release will be available in the large size too.

As always, comments, suggestions and corrections are much appreciated, and a download will be in the win'o when proofread and corrected. Hope you all enjoy.

Wasn't able to do a decent job on erasing the title on the front page without fucking the art, so it's only translated here.

But I prefer the black and white, personally.

The giant psychic octopuses also feature in other Wul works, like Niourk.

Someone on Kaskus has been developing an AI-translation for French comics.

While I feel it would be a fools errand. I can imagine feeding all the translated work of a singular translator into a machine for one series and using it on the remaining material for untranslated BDs form the same series.

I'm probably biased since I spend far too long on my own translations, but I'm not a fan of AI translation. I've tried out AI tools for bubble cleaning and typesetting, but found them not to be good enough.

Yeah, I did volume 3, Alice did 1 & 2 iirc. But there is also an official translation from dark horse. And the others I mentioned in the OP, Zarkass is available from Magnetic Press, and I did a scanlation of Temple of the Past.

I suspect the octopus tried to prevent the kid's death but was stopped by his comrades, and somehow that left a powerful permanent physical and psychic link with the girl at the point of her death. As her cloned body reached the physical and mental point of the original's death, the cloned body merged the octopus's link and the girl together.

Thanks OP, art for this was fantanstic, and like the idea of a sci-fi Gothic horror, but i don't think they pulled it off very well, specially the conclusion feels rushed and doesn't make all the much sense,

Yeah US Comics/Capeshit, don't stand a chance inside the french market.
Of course the sales are good, specially for Marvel since 2021 and the frendh editor "Panini" putting everything into an Omnibus.
Urban (DC) have good sales because of Batman basically.

But they don't stand a chance, Comics or Capeshit are becoming honerous, even if both of the french editors are creating new format :
imagine a "manga size" but with 500 pages of Fantastic 4 by Waid.
824 pages for 21 euros. The deal is great, specially if you read by travelling like i do.

I have an american friend from Phoenix, every year he visits France with his wife, and he buy french comics, he learnt french just for this.

Because good translations of BD takes a lot more work than mango. And it doesn't have the weeb factor to pull in extra hands so it's typically solo work. Your average shonenshit chapter has 4-5 people credited, while this one will have one (1) guy listed because i don't care about being credited for proofreading.

In Europe at least, it's just not exotic and appealing. Most people learn at least some French at school, so it seems like more of a chore, and French culture has less of an allure. Whereas if you're getting into Japanese culture, it's more of a hobby and so more fun.

Fair enough, perhaps it's changed, but when I was in school in England, decades ago now, it was compulsory from ~10-14, and you had to take at least one modern foreign language (French, German or Spanish) to 16. In Bavaria and Berlin at that time it was also compulsory for my cousins.

That sure as shit depends on what country you're in. I was given the choice between kraut and frog.and as a testament to my future dumbassery I picked kraut, thinking it would be the more useful one of the two. Decades later I can still count my use cases on one hand, with fingers to spare. If I had picked frog I would at least have the foundation to better myself to a point where I could read sweet and euro-esque untranslated bande desinee.
