This movie is almost perfect, except for Miriam's song. That sequence sucks so bad that I legitimately think that I'm watching some little known director's cut of the film when it gets around to that part. And then I realize I'd just forgotten it completely.

Why didn't audiences watch El Dorado or Sinbad? Dreamworks would've made 2D films for longer if they did.
Is it also because of the failure of Treasure Planet or something?

Funnily enough that song was the one that they promoted the heaviest. It won best song at the academy awards and even charted on the top 100. It's weird because the scene feels like hardcore tonal whiplash compared to what happened before.

I also don't like the overly caricatured servants that act as semi-antagonists and then just kind of dip out of the movie after the plagues sequence. Would have made them fit the tone better too. But yeah, outside of them and the When You Believe scene the movie's phenomenal.

Because after witnessing the masterpiece that is The Prince of Egypt, audiences recognized it as DreamWorks's peak and understood the studio had nothing more to offer them that'd match it in quality and sheer cinematic entracement.

Are you guys talking about When you believe? The song that is literally meant to represent the Hebrews finally finding freedom after centuries of enslavement? The one that is thematically meant to not only uplift the spirits of the hebrews but Moses after the emotional battery that occurred with the plagues? You guys are missing the whole point of the song which is meant to point out that despite all the hardship and pain that they just witnessed it was worth it because of the net positive that came from it. If you don't like the song that's fine but just admit it's song. It's purpose still makes sense and the film would suffer without it. If you want to get rid of any of the songs then get rid of "Playing with the big boys" god that song is the real tonal killer.

I fully understand the intent, in the movie it still feels weird that there's no wind down between what just happened and this hopeful song about miracles happening when you believe. The movie needed like a minute transition scene before she started singing, it kind of comes out of nowhere.

Like >>149378038 said it's just too abrupt, the last thing we see is Egypt getting blown the fuck up by God and there's barely even a pause, and then Miriam starts singing this hopeful song about miracles. The last miracles we saw were God fucking wrecking an entire nation and bringing it to its knees. Could have waited for like, the traversal of the Red Sea.

I wish more people would portray Moses' entire journey I wish this movie had sequels. But it gets too heavy and dark so I think they were knowingly not getting too deep into stuff. Even in the Ten Commandments movie which is largely a masterpiece I think they hold back on a lot.

I think most movies just want to end on a relative high note rather than feature wandering a desert until an entire generation of people die just to watch Moses as a geriatric barely manage to lead his people into Canaan where they proceed to slaughter the peoples living natively in the region.

I asked my older cousin about this, according to him the Prince of Egypt was a big deal here, people wanted to see a big budget Bible story with professional actors, it was really an "Epic" animated movie, that level of hype just didn't exist for El-Derado and Sinbad because they felt straight to DVD level instead of Epic,

Sinbad feels very epic. Encountering monsters with each turn. Dealing with a goddess. The fact that her monsters are constellation stars....

They were Hebrews and then not Jews, it's an important distinction, they were also Canaanites themselves who created a separate ethnic identity based on the worship of a minor Storm God who as their supreme War God, that identity grew and evolved, until the Jewish identity of the southern kingdom began, which then split again from the Phrasises sect

But their children got to live in the promised land.
I realize the idea of caring about anyone other than yourself might be alien to you, much less caring about your descendants, but surely you understand that many people throughout history did care about these things, and dying in the desert, but giving your children a better life was seen as a positive compared to ensuring their children will be born and live as slaves for the foreseeable future.

The delivery of this line made me think this was the opening verse in another song when I first watched it. Even now it's like my body expects it but the scene carries on as normal.
