The first book he's in makes him seem like a one-shot character...why did he take off so much? The "regular character" version is actually kinda different, justified by him quiting booze I guess.

His dark, brusque, older personality contrasts well with Tintin's light, gentle, and young personality. He's also very funny.

Tintin's a hero, he can do everything. But Haddock can do everything Tintin can't.

Tintin is the Boy Scout Herge wanted to be when he grew up, Haddock is the man Herge actually became when he grew up

I like how there were alcohol and/or drug references and taking in each of the comic books

The big question I always ask, is whether you take Haddock or Obelix with you in an adventure

Obelix may be an idiot, but he has super strength and is a loyal friend, so as long as you can get him to listen to what you say you should be fine. Haddock at the end of the day is just some middle-aged guy, he'd be fun to hang out with but not as useful.

Not being able to show alcohol/drugs in cartoons was actually pretty recent and largely a result of mid-20th Century American TV standards. Even then there were weird exceptions, like you still would see old theatrical shorts with drinking and smoking wholly unedited on TV until the early 00s.
