It was sabotaged internally because it was never supposed to exist. Micah Wright (granted, not the most trustworthy source but worked as Nickelodeon during this time) has openly stated that while 99% of the executives at Nick thought anime was a fad and that the baby demo was more important than the teen/young adult demo, one executive went behind everyone's back to give Jhonen Vasquez a blank check to create a show for Nickelodeon and got fired once the rest of the executives found out what he did and how it was too late to void the deal when they found out and fired the executive that made it.

Vasquez's contract for a show was too iron tight to void, so they basically went about doing everything they could to make sure it flopped and when 911 happened, they used that to get rid of it. They knew it was a big potential money making show (as seen by how after it died they licensed it out to make merchandise for it and put it out on DVD). But they hated it and hated that it proved their "baby shit only" crap mandate for the company was flawed as fuck given how much money they were leaving on the table not going after the teen/young adult market.

Invader Zim and Fairly OddParents premiered on the same day. FOP actually had the more troubled development... it was picked up from Oh Yeah Cartoons in 99, lingered in development for two years where only 10 episodes were ready for the first season, and had its share of edgy shit (like that kid that gets burnt alive in the fairy tale story book episode, or Vicky having legit bodies in her closet), but didn't crash and burn like Zim did.

Zim was grotesque to look at, not scary, there is a difference, and kids didn't enjoy it.

I just went to a hot topic and they're still selling tons of zim and gir shirts and hoodies on racks in the front of the store. Every con i go to i see several girls in GIR hoodies. The merch is more beloved than the actual show at this point. It's one of those IPs that isn't as good as the merch is. I tried rewatching Zim recently and while some was funny, there was way too much dated quirk chungus reddit humor for me to get through more than a few episodes at a time.

The show was infamously dragged behind a dark alley and shot in the middle of season 2's production. I think its as others pointed out, Jhonen has this really weird and specific outspoken public dislike toward Butch that seems to stem a bit beyond "your cartoon that happened to premiere on the same day as mine was more successful".
I mean Butch was also a massive egotistical ass, to the point where nobody on his own staff came to his defense when he was being cancelled. So I'm not ruling out him being at fault either. But I've also seen Butch extend several olive branches that Jhonen seemed to ignore.
