For me it was very good but not great.

Pros

>David Corenswet is a great Superman. Gunn managed to make him relatable, earnest but still cocky and impulsive, and Corenswet has enough charisma to pull it off while still coming off as very charming. I specifically liked that bit in the end where, after his big speech about being human, he tries to extend an olive branch to Lex.
>Rachel Brosnahan is a good Lois Lane. She doesn’t get much of a character arc and that interview scene made her come off as a bitch, but she has good chemistry with Corenswet and pulls off Lois’s livewire personality.
>Nicholas Hoult aced Lex Luthor. Best performance in the movie. I like my Lex a little more collected, but the temper tantrums didn’t bother me as much as I thought they would, and the ending sequence in the control room was peak Lex. I also appreciate they didn’t make him completely unsympathetic and had him show some concern for the Engineer and weep as his scheme is unraveled.
>The Engineer was a fun henchwoman with visually interesting powers and I liked that they gave her some moments of humanity.
>The Kaiju fight was probably my favorite action scene, which is surprising as I expected to dislike it. The Justice Gang fighting the Boravian army is probably a close second.
>Superman’s scene with Pa Kent at Kent Farm was very touching and laid out the movie’s themes without being overly explanative.
>The Not!Palestinian kids lifting the flag and chanting for Superman was a great emotional moment.
>The Justice Gang was well-written (though I have notes on the performances) and I liked seeing the Hall of Justice in live-action.
>The Daily Planet crew was well-cast even if they were all superfluous to the film (Did Ron Troupe even have any lines?)
>Krypto stole the show.

Cons

>Most of the humor didn’t land for me, especially the subplot with Jimmy Olsen and Ms. Teschmacher. The girl carried those scenes, which is surprising considering Jimmy is a comedy actor. The dude did not have the charisma to sell Jimmy’s maxed-out rizz.
>Like I said, the Justice Gang was well-written but the performances were a little disappointing. Guy Gardner was too low-energy, Mister Terrific was too angry/autistic, and Hawkgirl was bland. And while I didn’t mind the hawk screech, those ahegao faces she makes were stupid.
>Metamorpho was an annoying crybaby bitch and the most superfluous part of the entire film, though I reckon some of his scenes must have been cut given the jarring pseudo-introduction of Sapphire Stagg.
>Ultraman was alright, but felt like an afterthought added just so Superman would have someone to punch. Gunn could have streamlined that entire plot by merging Ultraman, the Engineer and Metamorpho into Metallo.
>There are some moments were Gunn strives so hard to be sincere it ends up coming off as irony, like when Lex is threatening the street vendor and he says “serving you food was the greatest honor of my life, Superman!” You can tell he wants that to be a genuine moment, but people in my theater were laughing (and they didn’t laugh at most of the jokes).
>The escape from the pocket dimension was boring CGI sludge, from the awfully fake-looking baby Joey to the eyesore proton river sequence.
>Lex’s exposition/comic relief techies were annoying.
>I did not care for the “Kryptonians are evil” twist.

Still 8/10 and well worth the watch.

Basically how I felt as well and I agree with most of your pros and cons.
Really good start that can be truly great in a sequel if they improve upon the flaws of this one. I really hope they make a sequel because they managed to make Superman, Lois and Lex super lovable. Dare I say they nailed them.
I mostly liked the Justice Gang as well, I think their dynamic was good. Mostly Gardner and Hawkgirl though. Terrific was a bit too much on his own.

Kind of weird they didn't say Lex fucked with the translation of the message or anything to undo the message. Just kind of out there and humanity just says he saved a city/country so he gets a pass.

I thought Superman 2025 was a good Superhero film, but not really anything more than that.
The core themes/emotional points/messages of the movie were supposed to be about the role of parenting in regards to Superman's origins, and also empathy and kindness being 'punk rock' in a world which views them as naive.
But the whole plot is so dense, and also filled with thematically unrelated subplots, that even where the main story would match the theme, it never really succeeds in doing so.

Another complaint I have is the swearing/vulgarity. I'm no prude I'm fine with both of those in films, I even like it. But Superman is a children's character, a character who's meaning and themes mean the most to children, and so his films I would prefer always being family friendly in that way.

Though as a comic book fan, and a Superman fan I did love a lot of the niche inclusions, characters, and subplots in this movie. I was very happy to see Jimmy Olsen get not only time to shine, but time which focuses on how inexplicable, and inexplicably successful he is. Metamorpho, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardener, Krypto, the robots at the fortress of solitude all had great roles.
I love how hate-able they made Lex Luthor in this. I wanted Krypto to maul him within an inch of his life, if not kill that son of a bitch.

Ultimately, while this succeeds in being a fun film, and very fun film for comic-book-Superman fans, the failure to really achieve a great thematic resonance made me find it just good and not great. That was to be expected.
DC, particularly in Superman movies, has the terrible habit of trying to hire every ex-Marvel guy, thinking that the way to beat Marvel is to just copy them. They did that with Superman Returns, with Josh Wheedon in Justice League, and now with James Gunn. While Gunn has done the best out of the rest of them, I feel he still left something to be desired.

>not a very funny joke,
most people, especially those who don't know the comic back story, particularly the silver age Jimmy, thought it was charming - so you are right about ONE thing, it wasn't a FUNNY HA HA, more of an observational humor bit

I've not seen much of the B&W/later color TV show, but I don't think we've ever gotten a really good Jimmy other than young, fairly innocent cub reporter (which is part of the comic book, but not even the best known part).
I'd like to see them do a one season HBO Max series set at the Daily Planet but also set in the this wider DCU that took some aspects of Fraction's recent Superman's Pal, but also took from the classic Silver Age books.

I agree with most of these, but I thought Krypto was just annoying and the scenes with the Kents didn't touch me much at all. Also the tone felt like it would shift really hard at times. Krypto is a big part of that.

(a) it's not in the movie
(b) it's not even a very good deep fake so it's clearly not even B-Roll, much less C-Roll from the programmers who did the actual CGI of the dog on the film

I mean, even the fan made animation from the Invincible amateurs is better than this, but of course, it was even better than what Crapzom and that fucking hack Rogan paid pennies to those Korean animators for

I went with a group of friends.
None of them read comic books.
The few that new of a character named Jimmy knew a tiny bit from either the "black guy" on Supergirl (clips), the Jimmy in Smallville (not even enough to know he supposedly married Chloe or got killed) - so not much at all.
So they based their feedback over drinks and dinner while we talked about the movie based on no real knowledge of Jimmy Olson, especially nothing about the Silver Age Jimmy, where Jimmy got the girl plenty of times, including aliens, princess, etc.

If you find that bizarre, maybe you need to make friends.

That you find it 'blanket' statement shows that perhaps you know little about Jimmy's actual comic book history yourself.

I don't have anything to add since I agree with just about every point. The positive points are amazing, but all the little things drag down the experience. I'd still give it an 8/10, but if they just tweaked things here and there, it could've been truly spectacular. I thought the scene with Pa Kent was one of the best I've seen in any superhero movie, although that may be because he looks almost exactly like my grandfather. Good work, OP.

I would think after the initial shock they would just come to realize he hadn't actually done anything his parents had told him to do in all his time as a public figure, despite being more than able to. And since this is a universe where People™ seem to generally be Good©, common sense prevailed.

I can't believe we got a Superman movie that was so blatantly anti-Zionist. There is already anti-settler colonialism built into the character (vs. Zod it's obvious) but this movie went so heavily into it down to killing the Netanyahu stand-in I was baffled this script even got approved for filming.
I don't think it's nearly perfect, especially with its approach to humor. In many ways it made me appreciate Man of Steel a lot more funnily enough (though that movie hews way too dour by the end). But overall it's probably my favorite Superman movie and one of the few good post-Infinity War superhero movies to pop into theaters (The Batman and Shang-Chi being the other two).
