Put simply, super-heroine movies tend to be half-baked. They're sloppy efforts to take a share of multiple markets, reaching for greatness one-handed and rarely seizing any without tripping over themselves. Saturation has made these schemes nakedly visible, and fatigue has made them totally unappreciated.

If they made a straight-up girls' movie and then laid some basic superhero trappings over it, then at least it would be novel. If they made a quality superhero movie where the protagonist was a woman, they would have a quality cape flick at the end. Trying to hybridize the appeal of two very different traditions into one with all these competing political wavelengths to attune to at the same time just isn't within the range of what a modern film studio is willing to fund.

Jessica Jones is a piece of shit with awful plot and characters, but Marvel fanboys soiface over it because they never watched anything of actual quality, so a mildly dark tone and themes (present in every low-quality Lifetime movie ever. So groundbreaking, lmao) are enough to make them think they're watching something good and sophisticated. Even though the writing is total trash and all the themes and character motivations are hammered down with a subtlety of a nuke.
